CVT transmissions

The CVT used in the Prius is a totally different design than the CVTs used in any other vehicle. It uses a single planetary differential gear set to combine power from two electric motors and the gasoline engine. The Prius CVT has been ultra reliable, in fact, the whole car has been ultra reliable which is amazing given the fact that it is so complicated.

If you knew the answer, why did you ask the question?

And did your friends have a mechanical failure or just don’t like they way they feel.

It's similar in principle to those of all hybrid Toyota and Ford products. There are no belts, clutches, brakes, or synchronizers. It's totally different from the mechanical belt-and-pulleys type of CVT. Don't confuse the two types. They have nothing in common except the goal of providing optimum ratio of wheel speed to engine speed.
 
As far as I know, Honda insight doesn't have a real CVT. Honda uses a serial hybrid arrangement whereas the engine isn't connected to drive train most of the time. The only time it does, it is clutched to it with no variation, in essence as a single-speed transmission.

As for real Honda CVTs, we have one in our Accord and, while it is not as pleasant to drive as a real auto with gears, it has been reliable so far with 68k miles on it.

Regarding the original post- obviously Toyota would be likely more reliable. But it is quite different from Insight in appearance, the way it drives, etc.

Not looking for a Honda Accord or any other non hybrid vehicle.
 
Reliability isn't an issue for me; if I'm looking for a car with 2 pedals I want a great conventional autobox like the ZF 8HP.

That is why I posted this topic on BITOG. To find out more info on CVT's and if there are differences between Hybrid and NON Hybrid CVT's.

Like mentioned earlier, its either going to be a Toyota Hybrid or a Honda Hybrid

Chaparral built a race car with a 2 speed automatic and only used one gear. The driver adjusted the slippage of the torque converter as they drove it. Maybe not a CVT, but you mentioned racecar. This happened about 40 years ago.

I owned a 2013. I prefer the CVT. As far as longevity, I cannot answer except to say I have not heard anything bad for quite some time.
 
Cvts from what I've read and seen aren't tolerant of lax maintenance. Two I hope nobody makes a cvt racecar blah. I've driven numerous cvt vehicles and no thanks. Dual clutch or regular manual transmission. Cvt's ruin the driving experience

CVTs were banned from Formula One racing in the 90s because... they were too good.

That's really bizarre. While there are reported failures on the various Internet forums pertaining to CVTS from each manufacturer, the failures rates reported are not any bigger than say-the GM failure rates for the motors with AFM.

Maybe your mechanics shop is located in the "Twilight Zone" or some other alternate universe..


Right. Internet forums are a better data source than what goes thru his shop. SMH.
 
my GF has 2014 Nissan small car 4 cly , CVT trans. i looked on the net. seams to me that brand has very little trouble with that trans. and on the hiway the RPM look to be about 300 lower that a reg trans. seams like a the engine has a little more load than a reg trans. but not to much.

Mechanics often only see broken cars. Dealers, DIY'ers, quicklubes handle maintenance needs, dealers get repair work during warranty, and corner shops get to see repairs when out of warranty. There can be a bit of bias here.

Yeah, so was the one with a giant fan behind it or the one with six wheels and the list just goes on.

Sorry, but there are a couple problems with your logic here. My bet would be there aren't many problems on the net... because not many people bought the Nissan's with CVTs (ok, this was partially tongue-in-cheek). Second off, the highway RPM has nothing to do with load on the engine... it's that the gearing of the CVT and the automatic are different at a given speed, hence the RPM difference.

Uh ... "highway RPM" has everything to do with load (i.e., torque) on the engine, because lowering engine speed by changing the "gearing" ratio requires increasing torque to maintain the same power.
