Coworker thinks 10w30 is obsolete

API SE or SG oil is obsolete, but no API SP oil is obsolete.

The question that remains is if the 10W30 viscosity grade is suitable for your application. A 30 grade has enough HTHS for most routine applications, and a 10Wx oil will start down to 0F (-20C). This will do me.

I recently purchased a few 5L jugs of semi-synthetic 10W30 rated API SP & ILSAC GF-6A. The price was good and they will definitely be used in my car.

Since I bought a 20l jug of no VII 10W-30 I sure don't think it's obsolete.

Wow! a Noack Volatility of just 3.3%, that's very good.

This is where narrow viscosity grades like 5W20, 10W30 and 15W40 shine, low volatility and low shear, win win.

Couple of Walmarts by me got rid of 10W-30 and replaced that shelf space with 0W-16. Still had the Diesel 10W-30 in the big jugs by the diesel oils. Shelf space is a premium when it comes to bottled items.

and more: (from the ravenol website):

  • Safety against sludge accumulation, cokings and corrosion even under unfavourable operating conditions
  • Guarantee of the function of the hydro tappets at all temperatures
  • No oil limited deposits in combustion chambers, at the piston ring and valves

the oil is ester/pao based so much like HPL no VII but with a lower ash add pack. HPL isn't available to me.

I haven’t seen a vehicle take 10W30 in a long time, heck, I don’t think I’ve seen a lawnmower or snowblower take it in a long time either. I’m sure they do, but mine are/have been rated for 5W30 for the past ten years or more.

So, you gave him 10 quarts of free oil, and he still blew the engine from low oil???
Did he not use it? Enquiring minds want to know…

Where are you at? Every Walmart in the Milwaukee area that I’ve been at has a 10W-30 on the shelf.

Well, the co worker does t have to worry anymore. Drove the truck low on oil and blew it up. Guess that 10w30 was NOT obsolete 🤣🤣
You gave him FREE oil to prevent him from running low on oil, and he STILL didn't use it? Well, you can only bring a horse to water. Can't fix stupidity. What an irresponsible character that guy is. Needs a lecture on his stupidity.

I have a lot of 10w30 oil bought on clearance, but it's not obsolete to me. I bought a lot of regular valvoline 5 qt bottles for $11 and I use it in our silverado and corolla.

Where can you get the 5qt Valvoline 10w-30 bottles for $11?

He is now looking for another ride. Asked me if I’d give him rides to work. I held out my hand and. Said “pay up then, nothing in life is free!”

He screws around too much at work and I don’t think he cares about me and older tech so karma sucks.
