We have a Bosch refrigerator Model: B36CL80ENS, purchased on 18SEP2024. Manufacturer's one year warranty expires on 18SEP2025. The retail cost of this Bosch refrigerator retails about $3,800 USD. Bosch's extended warranty is zero deductible, and covers up to $300 USD in spoiled food.

Here are the prices, from one year at $248 USD, to six years at $1425 USD. Prices seem high, but the bigger question is does Bosch have competent service technicians......

The big question is who does the service for them.

I buy my stuff at ABT because they have their own techs doing any kind of warranty

The big question is who does the service for them.

I'm sure that under a Bosch factory warranty, it would be a Bosch trained tech.
Yes, there is such a thing. I found that out when I had to have my less than 1 month old Bosch dishwasher repaired under warranty.
In answer to the question, yes I found the guy to be highly trained.
However, I'd self insure. Take the $1425. and invest it in a way that financially benefits you instead of Bosch.

Seems pretty unreasonable. Doesn't it have a warranty that comes with it? For example, why is it $248 to cover the first year?

On the other hand, on multiple occasions a coworker has said an expensive fridge broke out of warranty. Not usually first year, often 6th year.

Knock on wood ours is from October 2002 and I monitor the temps daily, because a forum said if you replace it you will get 5 years tops for that $1900. Person said I fix these things daily and you want to keep yours as long as you can.

imho what I would do is to roll the dice. My assumption is that the Bosch fridge can be repaired paying out of pocket, whether it breaks year 1 or year 10. If that is a wrong assumption, and the only way it can be repaired feasibly is with the plan because a repair would be too expensive, then I'd face a hard decision.

FYI my mindset.....I bought factory extended warranties on the last two new car purchases. I lost on both agreements. But I likely don't learn. I will definitely research a factory extended warranty on a 2025 GM. On the 2007 BMW? I lost my entire premium. Did not have a single repair on a 7/100 that I bought. One of the dumbest purchases I've ever made. At the time I got it for a discount and it was $2,800.

On a 4k refrigerator, to pay 1.4k to protect it, just doesn't seem reasonable. $300? $400 for peace of mind? Maybe.

Pulled the extended warranty PDF from the Bosch website. Sadly, Bosch doesn't administer the warranty, a company out of Chicago administers the warranty. Reviews on this third party suggest the administer of the warranty is in the "deny the claim" business.

In my experience appliance warranties aren’t worth it.. the appliance repair guys in my area may just be exceptionally bad, but they came to the house 3x to fix my new Frigidaire wall oven and after a couple months without a functioning oven I figured out how to troubleshoot it myself and replaced the wiring harness…

Thought that might be the case. Enjoy the refrigerator

Me personally I never buy extended warranties. Multiple reasons but the main one is I afforded the object I can afford to own it. The rest are solid actuarial reasons and logical financial reasons when you think about it.

These companies are not leaving a free lunch in said refrigerator. They exist to make big money and no you won’t be the one person who makes out

Look at some crook history- mainly in the auto extended warranty world but appliances too

Here is the Yelp review page for the administrator of the manufacturer warranty. One of the reviews is for a Bosch dishwasher:

Best Buy warranty here in Canada is very good I would imagine it's the same in the U.S.
I had a LG t.v go out on the third year. Tech came in looked at tv honest to god 30 second evaluation said bring it back to the store for full replacement value no questions asked.

Extended warranties for anything, especially cars, just don't make financial sense unless they're included in an agreed upon price(thrown in/free). Additionally, there's no guarantee regarding parts availability at the time of product failure...this is especially true for an appliance like a refrigerator. The rather recent issues with LG refrigerators and the class action suits is evidence of that . If the part is on backorder for 6-8 weeks, do you live without a refrigerator for that period? I think not.

Expensive warranties because they don't hold up. They are using propane as the refrigerate these days....until the govt. find something wrong with that.

Take the extended warranty money and put it in a special saving account that pays decent interest, or even invest it in a mutual fund. I never buy extended warranties, they are not worth it. Even when something fails once in a while, you still come out ahead.

I started my deductible/warranty fund in 2009. It now has over $ 110,000 in it. Most people will not do that well, but having a fund means not having to worry.

Can you buy the warranty after the unit fails? Wait a couple months and put in the service call. Just emergency buy or rent-a-center a 700 dollar temp backup unit to use in the meantime.

I would never buy a warranty on a refrigerator, but I would never buy a non-commercial expensive fridge being a penny-pinching Scot.

We have had but three refrigerators in 35 years in my log cabin home: Kenmore, Whirpool Gold and a G.E. (haier) and all three of those added together were under $1400 (The Sears came with the house)

Just a side note, The big 22 cuft G.E. Top freezer "garage ready" is not very good. runs constantly, heats the freezer to 45-50 during defrost, and it is not a dual compressor or dual evaporator. But it was around 680 bucks on sale. My mistake. BTW Haier is a fake made up Euro sounding name for the Chinese parent company. Like the pint of Häagen-Dazs pistachio that is in there, LOL. Whatever happened to Frusen Glädjé from the '80s? Now that was good fake stuff!

Never bought an extended warranty on an Appliance. Never had one fail either. Never could understand paying a higher price for something in case it breaks down. Makes no sense to me, being insurance is a for profit business with high profit margins I self insure and keep the money for myself.
