Hello,

I'd like to see what the forum would reccommend for my '03 Silverado V6.

I've narrowed it down to Mobil 1 Syn. or Chevron Supreme(Non-Syn), both in 10W30.

The engine is completely stock.

I live in south florida and I'd like to keep the truck for atleast 10 years.

I tow a small boat (1300#) abouth 3 times a month. And I take about 2 vacations a year +1500 miles.

Thanks,

Dave

How about Havoline 10W30? It is made by Chevron/Texaco. It is a good oil, less expensive and folks have posted some great UOAs using this product. My brother has a 2001 Silverado 4.3L and it has >240K miles using Havoline oil changing it every 4K miles.

If you aren't trying to go 6000+ miles between oil changes a good dino will work well.

I have been using Mobil 1 since day 1, and right now I have 20K.

I choose both of these oils because of availability, and then because of the price difference. Substantial savings in the Chevron @ 12.50 a case vs. the $23.00 for the mobil 1 6 Qts.

Thanks for the inpit so far. Can anyone else provide input? Any Chevy 4.3 V6 users out there care to input?

Thanks

GC seems to work well in my 02 silvo. I must warn you to keep a sharp eye for a distributor problem caused by poor ventilation, in your climate it may not be a concern but look under your cap for moisture and corrosion once in a while. You should also have your oil analyzed once in a while to check for leaking intake manifold gasket, I had to have mine replaced. The flag was sodium or potassium levels in the oil. good luck

Thanks for the replies so far, I really appreciate the info.

I would like to limit my choices though to the M-1 or the Chevron...due to availability & cost. Basically just want to know if the Chevron will provide the same amount of protection.

Dickwells-is there a TSB on both issues you mention? If so what are the #'s?

How are we to compare a syn to a dino oil?

I have used Mobil 1 10W-30 and 5W-30 in my Blazer 4.3. I liked how the engine sounded with the 5W-30 and the UOA was excellent. I am using the GC now but have slightly more engine noise.. I am planning on going back to the 5W-30.

Why not use 5w30 as recomended on the oil cap? GM has built the engine and has made the recomendation for a reason. 5w has half of the resistance as 10w at start up, why would you not want the oil to flow quicker at start up? Eveyone seems to think that thicker is better and that baffles me???????

I wouldn't think there would be any cold start-up issues in South Fla. I'm pretty sure GM recommends 5W-30 for C.A.F.E. reasons only. An oil sample will let you know for sure, though.
