Yes, I got a "J" VIN Corolla. Was very happy to see that the vehicle I wanted was actually assembled in Japan, Takaoka Plant (I think).

There is a plant code on the vehicle nameplate in the engine bay. 'A32' is the Takaoka plant. 'A42' is the Tsutsumi plant. And 'A54' is the Motomachi plant. I am actually surprised that yours is a Japanese corolla. The US version corolla is 140mm longer than the Japanese ones. The Thailand Toyota plant makes the similar US version corolla called the corolla altis.

Ken4,

I thought all "J" Corollas sold in the U.S. were from the Takaoka Plant.

I'll check that name plate tomorrow.

Corollas aren't hard on oil. This isn't a sludge-prone '00 model you're talking about. You can put just about anything in there with regular OCIs, and the engine will last longer than you want to keep it.

I've got a '95 Corolla with 214,000 miles. It has seen primarily SuperTech 5W- and 10W-30 motor oil and SuperTech filters. Yes, the cheap stuff, and no flushes or additives. I've recently changed to an oversized AC Delco PF-53 filter (intended for the V6 Toyota engine) and SuperTech 10W-40 oil and this car runs like a champ.

Slalom, with your talk about using cheap motor oil and getting 214k out of a Corolla, you're going to make all this talk of motor oil moot!

I just bought a Vibe with the same 1.8 engine as the Corolla. I did my 1st oil change at 350 miles on the car and i used the new Castrol Start Up 10w30. I got it for 1.50 a quart due to a price mistake at Wallmart. No problems what it. I'm planning to change it again at 2000 miles on the clock.

Well, now my decision is between using conventional and OCI @3K miles OR, M1 with OCI @5k miles.

Which would offer the most protection?
