I have a pre 06 corolla with 1ZZ-FE and it takes 3 qt of oil to the low level and 4 to the full level on dipstick. This is consistent with info in the manual and I don't care what amsoil guide says.

Yes, I believe you, just like I believe Bill. Obviously Amsoil has it wrong.

The oil cap calls for 5w30, but I've heard that 5w20 is approved by Toyota now. Should i switch to 5w20 Pennzoil Platinum for the next oil change? Or, is there a better option?

I read this^^^ And I read the responses. My question is: What is the goal or information you seek?

Tell me if I am off track here. Are you thinking about switching to 5w20 for fuel economy? Or to switch to a synthetic from conventional?

I used PP 5w30 and i wanted to know if 5w20 would be better since Toyota approves it now.

Gonz, what do you mean by "better"? Be specific.

Yea they do. 4.5 quarts would be WAY overfilled.

Take care, bill

I don't know. Toyota approved it for some reason, that's what I wanted to know.

Before I got on hear and knew what I was doing (for the most part). I had an Aspire which specced 5/10w30 and always ran with that. Til one day I went to the dealer to get a battery and decided to try their motorcraft. There was either 5w20 or 15w40 sitting there and I remember not being able to decide which one to get. Well, I ran the 5w20 during the summer and noticed the engine was smoother and had more pep.

Only later to find out (when I got here) that Ford back-specced most of their engine to 5w20, so I guess that made it ok.

What I'm getting at is that it should be ok. Try it and if you don't notice a difference, switch back to 5w30.

First off, there is a huge debate on here about thick oil vs thin oil. There must be at least 100 threads about it now, and another will soon come up. Click the link below for some of them.

As to your question, Toyota likely back spec'd it so they, as a whole, can meet CAFE regulations.
