I dont know that I agree that the 4F27E deserves to be called a good transmission, but IF they are maintained with periodic and not overstretched fluid changes, they can be pretty decent. They do have their quirks. I would definitely check the fluid condition and do a pan drop to change the filter, and do several fluid drain/fills.
The Mazda version of this transmission (FN4A-EL) isnt quite as durable but are quite easy to find in junkyards and I can confirm the pan does have a drain plug. The Ford FNR5 and Mazda FS5A-EL are five-speed versions of this same trans and as far as I know, the pan and gasket are all interchangeable so if the Focus doesnt have a drain plug and you want one, its cheap and not difficult to do.
From the pictures it looks like this car is in good shape.
8V is a split port and not an asset. $10k is way too much IMO, I hope no one buys it for that, and in a couple years needs an engine when the valve seats drop.... You guys have hardly any real rust compared to Ontario though, so a local $10k car must be decent? That would be a very good price up here, provided the rocker panels aren't rusted.
This one has half the miles, but still ...
It's offered by a small local used-car dealer who brings in clean vehicles from out-of-province. They're priced high compared to local stuff, but are always rust-free. (Note that the price is in C$, so a bit under $7K in USD. 12% sales taxes are extra.)

I’d be all over thatThe owner had commitments today and can’t show me the car until tomorrow. I have a few screen shot pics but will get better ones tomorrow. If it looks as good as the pics I’ll probably bring it home tomorrow.

Excellent purchase. My 2004 2.3 manual is at 203,000 miles and not one problem ever.Update : I brought the Focus wagon home 9 days ago. So far I’ve changed the oil to Valvoline R&P, with a Supertech filter, flushed the cooling system twice, siphoned 2 qts of transmission fluid and refilled with Supertech Mercon V and will do the same several times in the near future. I also have a bottle of DG red but it shifts so good I’m not sure it even needs it. Replaced the 3 wiper blades and had a local alignment shop look at the front end and suspension and they said everything looked great. It drives like new with tight steering and suspension and tracks true. EVERYTHING works great on this car, even the single disc CD playersounds great and the rear gate window washer still works.
Previous owner put new tires and new rear gate struts on and the brake pads and rotors look new and The a/c is ice cold. I found a sticker in the glove box that says the water pump and timing belt were changed at 112,000 miles and it just rolled over 120,000 miles this week. The wife wanted some pine needles for a natural area so I put 6 bales in the back without having to lay the seat backs down. It will probably hold 9 bales with the seat backs down. I buffed the paint today with Meguiars medium cut and it looks much better. It does have a small spot where the paint is chipping away down to the primer but I’ve already talked to my trusted body guy who’s going to fix it in a couple of weeks. Also the rocker panels are pristine, like new, and the first tank it got 32 mpg. I didn’t ever haggle with the seller, I just gave him 32 Benjamin’s and hauled ass before he had a chance to change his mind!
