Audi calls for 10k intervals on my new S4 (supercharged DI 3.0 V6) but I plan to change every 5k. Audi Care will take care of the 10k changes at no charge. Car has 26k on the clock right now.

Since this car is my first real expedition into forced induction, what special considerations do I need to take into account when picking an oil? Note that it also has the Stasis ECM so it's putting out 410hp/370lb-ft versus the stock 333/325. Audi requires a 502/505 oil for this car and it's still under warranty for several more years. I suspect the dealer has been using the SLX Professional up until now.

By the way, this motor has a redesigned EGR/PCV system that does not suffer from carbon buildup like the older motors do.

And yes, I do take full advantage of that power regularly. The car isn't a DD, mostly a weekend/errand car.

My guess is any oil that is 502/505 certified will definitely keep that block spinning happily for years to come.

Mobil 1 0w40 comes to mind.

That's what I was thinking too.

Also considered Motul Specific 502/505 though you just can't beat Mobil 1 0w40's value.

I'd consider the motul if the volatility is lower. I'd also go back and read through ri_rs4's threads on Audi DI.

His RLI Bio-Syn 5w40 isn't Audi approved.

Plus my newer motor has a revised system and all the pics I've seen of 30k+ mileage cars show no deposits on the valves.

Mobil 1 0W-40 is a no-brainer but even though it's a turbo I'd consider one of the 0W/5w30 from Total or the Lubro-Moly LL 5w30.

Caterham, it's a supercharged direct-injected V6.

It is possible to show oil temperature in the DIS display but not pressure as far as I know.

Yeah but I'd still look at which of the oils appeared to serve better in the DI application.

You dont know if the ECU as modded prevents deposits.

Id still want to take care with DI.

Okay, then I'd choice a high VI 0W/5w30 along the lines I suggested.
Dparm, Mobil 1 0W-40 is way to easy for you to get.
With your experience locating interesting oils one of the other German made oils that meets the 502/505 spec' is what I'd suggest.

If you're going with the dealer 10k change under AudiCare, then nobody needs to know what you do at 5k intervals.

The two Audi dealers that I've been to in NJ for service use Syntec 5W-40. I would get an oil sample pump and sample at 5k on the dealer fill and decide from there. Good to hear that engine doesn't suffer from carbon build-up. The 3.2 V6 in the Q5 has had a few cases.

...and how can you be sure? It's still a direct injection only system, which if it has EGR, if it still has some form of EGR whether valve timing or not... you're going to get the build up

The dealer will likely be using whatever is cheapest that meets the spec, from a large drum out back.

Mobil 1 0w-40 FTW.

Does this supercharger have a sump of it's own?

There are guys with 30-40k on the clock who have posted photos of their valves. Nearly spotless. This motor has been used in the A6 (lower output) for a while too and the same thing -- no buildup.

I do not know if this SC has a separate sump. The car takes 6.6qt of oil.

Well I actually called the dealer that has done all the service on this car and they said "we use Syntec 5w30 in all the Audis".

I asked if they meant SLX Professional or just "off the shelf Syntec" and he confirmed it's just regular Syntec (which would be EDGE).

I sure as [censored] hope he's wrong, as that's not VW approved...

Ha, and I call back 10 minutes later, talk to a different advisor and get the answer: "full Syntec 5w40, Audi-approved". He also said he didn't think it was SLX since he hadn't heard of it.

I suspect the first guy was thinking of the SLX Professional 504/507, hence the 5w30 claim. Or he just had no clue what he was talking about. :-)

And there is SLX Pro 504/507 (a 5w30), and 504/507 supersedes 502/505.

None of those oils are particularly impressive.
