Been looking at the specs on all these 5w30's from the above. I don't know what the formulations of these four are but, I did see differences in all of there data sheets. I would like to know anyone's opinion on their 5w30's in semi synthetic and full synthetics. Kinda like what I saw with the Kendall oil and their diesel oil options looked really good. I can get most of their products from companies in the area.

Add Motorcraft to the list as Conoco supplies it too.

It is the general feeling here that those oils are very close to the same. I know there are some dissenters though.

I believe they all use the same Korean Gp III base stocks for their full syn lines. The additive packages may be slightly different; I don't know. I like the cold specs for the Kendall 5w30 enough that I bought a case of it for the Miata. IIRC, it has a higher virgin TBN than some of the others I was looking at as well. I haven't used any yet, but I'm sure it will perform just as well as any other SM-rated Gp III synthetic, and at a better price.

G.

Their low price for their syn blend oils leads me to think that they're blending cheap low-spec conventional oil with their imported cheap low-spec Gp III oil to produce an oil who's main advantage is the marketing muscle gained by calling it a synthetic blend. I wouldn't prefer this oil over any top quality conventional oil...Chevron, Pennz, etc.

I've been told by a source I trust that their 5W-40 full syn gasoline engine oil is one of the better ones.

Well, they are all made by the same company, using basically the same blend of Group II and III base stocks, and although the additive package of each is slightly different, they are close. If I were going to choose one, I would choose the Motor Craft. Why, I like the Red bottles.

Interesting question. I've used Kendall since 1981. I know that the product changed when CP took them over - the appearance of the oil changed.
However: I have faithfully sampled and analyzed every oil change on seventeen different vehicles over the last 27 years. I change every 6,000 miles or 12 months. The UOAs are always exactly what I want to see. Isn't that really what we're after?
IMHO, the biggest key to long engine life is to keep the crankcase filled to the proper level and keep dirt out. If you're using the proper grade, you won't go wrong with any of them.

Well said.

I've got a stash of kendall 5w20 blend on the shelf. Seems like great stuff

Kendall used to be a company, then the brand rights were sold to Sun. Then Sun decided not to keep the brand and sold to a company named Tosco. Then Tosco didn't want the brand and CP ended up buying the rights to the brand. Quite a change from company to a brand tossed around - interesting history.

As far as differences between the similar products - I would venture to guess that every bulk distributor out there has 1 tank for each vis grade. No way CP has separate tanks for "similar" products at their blend plants or would they expect their distributors to have multiple storage tanks for "similar" products.

"marketing muscle" indeed is their angle using the "syn blend" marketing label.

A label is just a commodity to be bought and sold as a valued. In all markets expect less and less independents.as consolidation contiunues to concentrtate.
