One of the professors in my office, a lady from China, has asked about someone to edit/proofread a paper of hers. I'd love to do it, but I have no idea what kind of fee to ask. What's the going rate these days? Not editing for content, I'm not a Ph.D., but for spelling, grammar, clarity, etc.

I'm a PhD student (hopefully candidate in a week) so I might be able to help somewhat. But I'm certainly no expert in this type of thing.

What type of office are you in? Are you the secretary for the dept. and she is a professor in the dept.? Or are you staff in the university's writing center?

Does she have grant money or start-up money that she plans to use for this purpose? Or is it out of her pocket?

The cost should be per page or per hour, not per paper.

Hello, Wally,

Yes, I'm the office manager, and she's a visiting postdoc. It'll probably be out of her pocket; she's quite well-paid (by my standards), but I don't think she has any grant or start-up funds.

Yes, I was thinking per page; she says it's a 20-page paper. Four bucks a page? Five?

If you are a very good writer and/or good editor (I don't think you'd be considering doing this if you weren't) then I think you're in the ballpark. Is this at LSU? I'd probably go about $4 per double spaced page. I'd count title pages, pages with figures/tables or their legends, etc. as 1/2 a page. If she is in a discipline where there are very high standards for scholarly writing in terms of grammar/diction/etc. (there aren't many), then I'd go up $1-2 per page.

This is a good suggestion as well.

If it is a particularly difficult topic then a factor of 3 could also work.

$75 to $100 is more like the rate for professional translation services. The fee is determined by cents per word, cents per line, or dollars per hits. A 10 to 20 cents per word charge is common. There are "translation farms" in South America that charge only 3 to 5 cents per word.

Non-specialized proofreading should not cost more than $45 per hour, and that's a pretty steep charge.

Should anybody want me to proofread their posts, my going rate is $1 per line.
