Who uses it?

I have Leland West for my 81 MB. It is like a third of the cost of a liability only standard policy, and is full coverage.

Have been looking at options because given their use, while not necessarily antique/classic, it looks viable to put my 81, 82, 98 and 11 vehicles, all low use pleasure vehicles, under such a policy.

The companies all weasel word though. Some talk only car hobby related stuff - stop at HD or go to a restaurant and get hit and youre not covered... No thanks. I specifically have a limited commuting rider on my 81's policy for the two times a year that I might drive it to work.

Some companies say unlimited mileage but then talk out of both sides of their mouth - use is good, take it to dinner or a trip, but again, no commuting, errands, hotels, etc., and possibly even use it unlimited only to do shows and parades - while pleasure use is claimed OK, you could drive it cross country to a car show and be OK, but take it cross country for pleasure and no good...

A couple companies have some kind of freedom tier, where limited general use is acceptable, which to me is a good comprimise, so that one can stop at Home Depot on the way home from commuting once in many months, and not lose coverage.

Not trying to cheat the system, I have enough daily drivers and use them as such. Its more that the seldom use cars are just that, fairly seldom used. So to use regular coverage when the vehicles see no real use and thus no real risk is silly...

But no documents are really clear to give true indication of coverage.

Anyone really made heads and tails of these policies? What do you use and why? Ever get the wishy washy answers?

Anyone ever need to do an at fault claim on a classic policy?

This is interesting...because I wondered if I could my 9 year old cavalier on this type of insurance.

Because of all the stupid going on in this state, simple basic coverage on this car went from 400 to 1200 bucks in less than two years!

Car sees less than 5k in miles( a year), so it's nearly a collector car at this point...

Interesting somebody is in the same boat as me!

9 year old Cavalier ...........nearly a collector.............

Tell us you are joking!

To the OP:

I had Hagerty at one time on a 70 GTO Judge. Never had a claim but the rate was low and other users said they were a good company. I had to prove it was garaged. Belong to a car club? See what others use for your marque or check the appropriate forum.

Doesn't mean I can't look for other options though...

I have two collectors with Grundy. They require proof of a "daily driver" that is insured as a daily driver.

They also require that a document be signed that there is NO insurance coverage if you allow someone under 25 to drive the vehicle(s).

They don't have any annual mileage limit, unlike other companies that insure collector cars.

They are insured for a stated value, and they have full coverage as well.

I started out with Hagarty, but they have more rules than Grundy. Quickly switched to Grundy and have been happy.

Me and a buddy each had our cars insured with JC Taylor. One of his cars got hit in a parking lot of a restaurant he stopped at on the way to a car show. JC Taylor denied the claim since he was not with the car at that exact time.

We both switched to Hagerty. My buddy had another claim from a drunk driver that totaled a Studebaker. He had a check in his hand 2 days later.

Great service from Hagerty. Also, did not find a bunch of "restrictions" with their coverage.

With any policy, you really need to read the fine print.

Hagerty was cheaper then JC Taylor.

I have State Farm on my old cars. They have an agreed value type policy for classic cars so you can set the value and then they take pictures and document the car. The only restriction was the mileage per year but that wasnt a problem for me since I dont drive them that often. 3000 miles per year is the limit.

Now I have heard all the claims that I should be insured with a company that only deals with classics etc, but I did have a claim on my car from an accident. Long story but it was in my own garage when it happened and State Farm was first class all the way in getting it fixed. I could pick any shop I wanted, they sent an appraiser to see the car at the shop and they ended up paying right there on the spot with a check. They even called back 2 weeks later and made sure the car was fixed to my satisfaction and that the claim was paid exactly like I wanted. I was surprised and very happy with their service.

I have Hagerty on the Midget. Years ago I just had plain Jane insurance on it through Allstate, but when my ex and I combined insurance she suggested I should talk to our agent about a better policy for it. Happily, he was also the Hagerty rep, and has his 1967 Jaguar E-type covered through them. Provided I have a regular daily driver and it has a garage, they are pretty reasonable. Agreed value more than covers what I have in it, and the premium is low.
