Chrysler MS-6395

Hello all, I just bought a "new to me" 2015 Ram with the 5.7L. It has 25k on the clock. I wanted to go ahead and change the oil because I am not sure what the dealer may have used (but the oil filter was a "pro tec"...never seen those before so it had to go)
So checking the manual I see 5w20...no problem there....and the MS-6395 spec. I looked around for what this spec actually is and didn't find much and I also didn't find too many oils that meet it. The book actually recommended Pennzoil but Im sure it is a businesses deal thing with Chrysler and Shell. I found that on the back of the bottle that Quaker State conventional meets the spec as well as Pennzoil conventional. The Quaker State Conventional was less than the Yellow Bottle, so I gave the Ram 7 qts of Quaker State Green bottle and a new Mopar filter. My question is, will the Quaker State Conventional be fine for the length of the oci which could be as much as 7-8K from what I read on some forums (depending on conditions....truck has an oil monitoring system like lots of vehicles now) or should I have went with the Yellow Bottle ?
I know both are made by the same company, so I am wondering if the GB is a "lesser" quality product or if the difference in $ is just in the advertising....
What do you know about the Chrysler spec ? Is it applied to a superior product or to whoever is willing to pay Chryslers for the right to put it on their bottle?
If you have a Dodge/Chrysler/Ram 5.7, what do you like to do as far as oil choice and oci ?

I don't own a vehicle with the hemi, but have maintained a Grand Cherokee and several Chargers.

Don't worry too much about the oil. Pennzoil and QS are both fine. Stick with the oil life monitor and start planning your service when it hits 15%. Get an oil analysis if you really want peace of mind.

Pay more attention to the suspension and steering components, which seem to be the weak point of current FCA vehicles.

It's apolitical thing. Has nothing to do with a "special" oil.

Does it not require a 2 year PoP test ? Mobil Super conventional was tested (passed) and M1 was not ?

Just use any Pennzoil product in the viscosity stated in the owners manual and don't overthink it. Once the warranty is up a 5w20 from any of the major brands is fine. GB is a lesser quality than the Sopus flagship Pennzoil products, but it is still a very good product.

FTR Mobil 1 is a better product than any of the Super products, but Super meets the MS6395 spec and Mobil 1 doesn't. Super is also a fine product. I'd venture to say there's a little bit of politics and not wanting to pay up for the spec that plays in.

I pretty much ignore that spec. If its SN oil, it will be fine. Most oils would pass, but they dont want to spend the money to get it tested and pay a per quart licensing fee similiar to what Dexos requires.

Green bottle and yellow bottle are fine oils. (I'd run the cheapest synthetic 5W20 I could find personally likely SuperTech)

Most Valvoline products meet MS-6395, in conventional, semi-synthetic and full synthetic. Lots of choice there.

Quaker State and Pennzoil Conventional are both great conventionals and lately pretty much look to be nearly the same oil. Not keen on the 5w20 but it won't grenade on the stuff. I'd not run a conventional 5w20 7 or 8k miles though.

Hi @Familyman - Nice choice! To answer your question...yes, the oil will be just fine for the length of the OCI. Please note that we recommend following the OCI listed in your owner's manual. Hope this helps! - The Quaker State Team
