Over the past few years, there's been sporadic discussion about the 5-year inspection for the lifetime warranty offered by Chrysler a few years back. I had it done earlier in the month and just wanted to share what was done --

The inspection is 5 parts, with the first being the validation:

VIP VALIDATIONS
1) Original owner & owner identification matches 2)WCC799 or 833; 3) States "This vehicle is eligible for the Lifetime Powertrain Warranty 5Yr. Inspection" and 4) Inspection is within 60 days +/- of in-service date.

POWERTRAIN INSPECTION STEPS
1) Lift the vehicle on suitable hoist.

2a) Check all powertrain components for leaks.
*Does the vehicle have a warrantabie powertrain leak, obtain Service Manager approval for this repair to continue inspection.

* Does the vehicle have a non-warrantable powertrain leak, customer must authorize retail repair before inspection can continue.

2b) Check all powertrain components for physical damage,
*Does the vehicle's powertrain have physical damage, customer must authorize retail repair before inspection can continue.

2c) Does the vehicle have modifications that have affected the operation of the powertrain?

3) Lower the vehicle and check the level and condition of all applicable powertrain fluids.

* Are powertrain fluids at acceptable levels? If NO, have these levels caused damage?

* Are powertrain fluid conditions acceptable? ~ If NO, have these fluid conditions caused damage?

4) Connect a diagnostic scan tool and check for any active powertrain related Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC),

*If exhibiting anv active powertrain related DTC, customer must authorize warrantable and non-warrantable repair before inspection can continue.

************

That's pretty much it. It's basically verifying that the vehicle is still owned by the original owner and has no obvious neglect or damage. Sorry for any typos, I simply copy-and-pasted a scan w/OCR so it's not exactly word-for-word.

For me, it was pretty much in-and-out with a PASS. I didn't have to deal with any upsells or anything.

No, they're not. They are still building garbage and then jerking the dealers around when people have valid warranty problems.

From what was there it looks like they have a lot of wiggle room when deciding if it's coverable or not.

That thought definitely crossed my mind, too. I'd be curious to know if anyone has run into that situation, especially in terms of how subjective the fluid inspection is (they don't check records or analyze fluids, since it's all visual).

I'm guessing the biggest reason for the inspection is to simply give the underwriters an idea regarding how many vehicles are still covered. I suspect way more vehicles have been sold or totaled over the course of 5 years, than anything else.

It will be interesting to see how warranty claims are handled 5 or 10+ years out, as transmissions and engines start to fail. I'm sure it's an enormous liability.

They are doing their best to make sure you can't get the inspections done, or they will think of ways to void it.

Didn't use X oil - voided
Missed an oil change by 3 miles - voided

Is this based on personal experience? I haven't heard much one way or the other about people using the warranty. I'd be curious to know what happened to your car.

I'm not sure what they'll do down the line but the 5 year inspection requirement had to be signed off on when I bought it and I also got a reminder in the mail.

What are you basing this on? The OP stated nothing of the sort.

What do think they're going to do? Replace stuff that isn't broke?? Of course a lifetime warranty is going to have strings attached.

You follow the rules the best you can and hope it helps in times of need.

I have to make an appointment to bring my Jeep in. [censored] will freeze over before they try and sell me anything. If the experience was anything like the OP's it will shock me. I'll try my best and keep an open mind. I just have to find the time to bring it in.

I'm sure someone has tested it. You know, 2 throttle positions, none and WOT. Maybe a couple hundred passes at the dag strip, etc.

I think they are counting on that most will get rid of their cars well before needing the warranty. I cant think of any Chrysler from that time period (don't think the Challenger was out then) that I'd want to keep long.

Yup, my parents. They have 60k on theirs with the "lifetime" warranty. Engine knocks, burns oil, we find small bits of metal that comes out on oil changes.

Chrysler has no interest in fixing it.

Someone I know just got a steering rack.on his Charger gratis under the warranty. (He went lifetime BtB.).The car has over 230,000 miles.

My freind brough his 08 Charger RT in last year.

Got free serpentine belt, free rad hoses with coolant flush, and everything else checked, anything they find is replaced free, what part of free bumper to bumper do people fail to understand?

I will give you $20 if you can show me a documented case of this.

That is probably a different, aftermarket warranty ...

For late 07, 08 and some 09 - a powertrane only lifetime warranty was issued for the original owner only.

After 3/36, the bumper to bumper went away.

It's nice to hear some people are having success with warranty repairs.

However, this language from the warranty terms stands out to me. For both non-warranty leaks and damage: "customer must authorize retail repair before inspection can continue."

Isn't that saying they won't even do a full inspection to look for warrantable problems unless the owner agrees to pay for non-warranty repairs first?

Have the, give it a few Italian Tune Ups or just generally beat on it for a bit. Take it to open track night at the drag strip. When the engine throws a rod it will get fixed free. Sucks to have to do that but if they want to spend a lot vs a little let them.
