The HOV lane thing is cool, but I don't live anywhere near any HOV lanes. And if you don't like the rest of the incentive package, write to your representative and elect one who will vote against such.

Turn the old one in and install a new one. They are quite recyclable. Why is this some big mystery as compared to any other major system refurb that other cars occasionally need? The battery can by rebuilt, just like an engine or transmission. And I love how the hybrid haters howl long and loud about the big hole in the ground that is supposedly left after mining the metals for the batteries. But they forget to howl about the hole in the ground that gets dug to mine the metals for your huge block V-8 engines. Why is that? Because this "basis" for condemning hybrids is nonsense.

Your neighbor is silly. The batteries are usually lasting as long as the rest of the car, with some rare exceptions.

First off, hybrids are NOT electric cars. They are gasoline powered cars that can re-use energy usually wasted in your brakes. Second, the electric cars dies off swiftly and surely, and for good reason. None of the reasons for the EV's demise apply to the hybrids, AND as I said above, the hybrids are still going strong and stronger. If they were going to fade out, I think the fade would have started by now. It hasn't.

I remember the demise of EVs too. Nothing like what the hybrids are experiencing. I also remember gas at less than $0.50 per gallon. Oddly enough, we never have made it back to that level (even accounting for inflation). I remember 1973, 1979, ... and of course, the post-Katrina explosion.
Show some respect for lovcom, even if you disagree with him. This is a free country and he's as entitled to have and state his opinion, and live here, as you are. Yes, I have the right to speak to this, having served as a Marine for almost three decades. Clear?
