Chrysler Group LLC will sweeten cash rebates to as much as $4,000 and offer interest-free loans on its new 2010 models, as it competes in a sluggish market where consumers can't afford what they used to buy.
Buyers of any 2010 Chrysler vehicle, Jeep or Dodge car can get interest-free loans of up to 60 months, or cash rebates of up to $3,000 for Chrysler, up to $4,000 for Jeep and up to $2,500 for Dodge cars.
Those buying a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 can borrow for up to 48 months for free, for 60 months at 2.9% or take up to $2,500 cash. The rebates are $1,000 higher than Chrysler's current marketing program.
Through October, Chrysler's 2009 U.S. sales are down 39% from a year earlier.
There's another lure. Instead of rebates or interest-free loans, buyers of a Chrysler Town & Country can have a DVD system for no extra cost. Dodge is offering all-wheel drive on the 2010 Charger for no charge.
To clear out remaining 2009 light-duty 1500 trucks, Dodge is offering either zero percent up to 72 months or rebates of as much as $5,500 on the Ram. The program continues through Jan. 4, 2010. There are no incentives on 2010 heavy-duty Dodge Ram trucks.
A key element of CEO Sergio Marchionne's turnaround plan is to produce only as many vehicles as it can reasonably expect to sell. The goal is to sell them as close as possible to the sticker price.
"We've got to stop commoditizing this stuff," Marchionne said earlier this month. "For too long" Chrysler "has dumped this for two grand, 4,000, 3,000 bucks off this. We've turned the product into absolutely anonymous creations of engineering and four tires. That's not a car."
