Chevy 2.4L filter distortion

Customer came in yesterday complaining of an engine knock on a 2010 Equinox with the 2.4L. We checked the oil and found the level just barely on the dipstick. Changed the oil and filter and the noise went away. This is the filter we pulled out. It's a Napa Pro Select that we normally use, but it had over 8000 miles on it. We've already done timing chains on this motor and these 2.4L's seem to be doing this more and more.

Makes you wonder if the filter is a tad too long or the cap was overtightened. I don't think the 8,000 miles was a factor. Might have been distorted from installation.

They seem to be knocking more? Could it be because the person ran it low on oil too much?

The 2.4L that we service seem to be doing this to the filter and having more timing chain issues.

Oh. Wonder if the aftermarket filters are too big?

I have also seen that recently in that application. It was a DEFENSE CH9018, IIRC. Just my 2c.
