You can go a bit bigger.

Ive got a 588 in my little boat that's still a standard deck height.

It "only" makes 725HP and 840 LB/ft though because I need a tame cam so as not to revert water.

Would that bolt right into my Subaru Outback, or would it require a few modifications first?

And how much of a performance gain from my current 4 cylinder (175HP) would result from this upgrade?

yeah but a 540 will get a lot better gas mileage

The 621 HP similar engine is a measly $16k, not the 1000hp.
