If you want to stay with synthetics that meet the Corvette spec, here's some options:

Castrol Syntec 5/10w-30
Chevron Supreme Synthetic 5/10w-30
Elf Excellium GM 5w30
Pennzoil Platinum 5/10w-30
Quaker State Full Synthetic 5/10w-30
Amsoil XL 5/10w-30
Havoline Synthetic 5/10w-30
Schaeffer Supreme 7000 SAE 5/10w-30
Valvoline SynPower 5/10w-30

Follow Bill in Utah's advice. He has a silverado 4.8 that see's about 5K a year. If I remember correctly.

??????

Sounds like reasonable advice, Dave 1251, but for some reason, I can't seem to find a post from Bill in Utah in this thread!

Some one call?

If it was me, I would (and do) 6 month oil changes since its SO easy to change oil on this engine with Pennzoil, Halvoline, Castrol Gtx or QS. Change the filter also. Oil change and filter for less than $15 at walk in to Wal-Mart prices. (My oil change incl filter is less than $6)

My best UOA on my 2000 Silverado 4.8l V8 was with Chevron 5w-30. Here is that UOA 4k miles UOA Chevron 5w-30

My truck is 7 years old and just turned 50k. Never been back to the stealership (though I need to get all the recalls done...) for anything.

I had to replace a vavle cover gasket and the engine was spotless. Nothing.

I've run Mobil 1 and did a UOA and both Chevron and Pennzoil Conventional oil did better on the UOAs. This is for the same OCI and same time of year.

MPG has been around 21 with any oil.

Since gas is lower, I try to drive it to work atleast once every other week (50 miles one way) to get it warmed up. When gas was $3 a gallon, It did not get used as much.

I think that getting the oil out every 6 months would be better for the engines long life.

Take care, bill

Regarding Bill in Utah, that is why I did include the Havoline

he has a 4.8 in his truck that is very similar to the 5.3, and good UOA.

Just taking in all the suggestions from the members here, this if for my Dad's truck. We have been running Mobil 1 in the gasoline engined family vehicles since the middle 1980's, but with it now being group III, I thought time to investigate a change

We don't know if..... "supersyn"..... is or not.

Bill

we must have been typing at the same time, I remembered reading a UOA on your engine, Chevron=Havoline is also something I remembered.

It will take a while to look over all the responses

I got the same engine.

I tried PP twice AFTER the M1 and really liked it. I do use Amsoil now.

So, of your choices, I recommend PP.

Good luck !!
