OK, so my concept of texting is you text someone whenever you want. When they have time they read the text and maybe respond. Your not interrupting them like a phone call would. Works for me.

So now daughter has an Apple Watch where the texts come out also on her watch. So now I am being told I interrupt her at work when I text. (She is 34).

So I told her the Apple watch is junk and sell it on LetGo.

?

What's the difference between that and having a desk phone # work; i answer txts and the phone when i want; technology is there to be a slave to me, not the reverse.

You can put your phone in "do not disturb" mode when you don't want to be bothered. Can't you do the same with Apple Watch?

Sounds like she lacks self control. If she doesn't want the smart watch to give her notifications why not just get a regular watch?

I like your advice.

Indeed; I answer as I feel like.

Not sure what a smart watch does for anyone; I haven't gotten the appeal. When my wife upgraded her Fitbit I took her old one; and to me, it's annoying to have to recharge a watch every two days or so. I guess it's a screen which is even easier to see notifications on? Flick of the wrist, and you can decide if you need to get your phone out or not.

Sounds like she just needs to take the watch off while at work, and put it to sleep or something.

I'm sorry to hear that. I don't mean this in any offensive way, but I'd never tell my folks to not text or call. If what I'm doing at that moment strictly prohibits me from responding or answering, then they understand. However, if it was an emergency, I am confident that they'd continue to call.

I'd assume you can put the watch in DND mode or vibrate only. Perhaps a good Citizen EcoDrive is needed. Who in the h-e double hockey sticks what to charge a (hoover) dam watch.

People are idiots. This is almost as bad as the morons posting every piece of gum they step on on Farcebook. A TEXT MESSAGE! LIFE MUST PAUSE!!!
My wife will do a figurative finger poke, texting my name, expecting me to get star struck and ask her what she wants. Then she will yell at me for not responding to her so she can ask the question that could have been long answered if she just said it in the first place.

One more reason to hate phones.

Yikes. Technology issues. But some much more serious ones too. Texting is NO substitute for actual communication. I use it as a way to get information to someone I really don't want to interact with. That shouldn't be a spouse.

Sounds like:
-she may be stressed at work
-She may be a little mad Dad is coming close to retirement (too much free time for Dad)

I know she may be your little baby, but can you answer this:

"What women want?"

She got the Apple watch for fitness. Having it display texts is another feature.

She is probably stressed.

Most of the time I am answering a question of hers. But by the time I answered, she was busy.

Probably it's the stress.

Texting etiquette totally depends on the relationship between the texter and the textee, and the circumstances surrounding the series of texts in question. Just because it is a text doesn't mean there isn't etiquette, as there is with any other type of communication. If your daughter doesn't want to be texted while she is at work - don't text her while she is at work! (unless, of course, it is important enough to warrant immediate communication but not so important as to warrant a phone call).

My grand-kids talked me into a smart phone. I've come to realize it can be nice on occasions but, I consider cell phones "anti-social devices" because people don't communicate anymore, they text and I find that sad. Ed

this is frustratuon that she feels she needs to stay open to your requests e.g. for emergencies, but at the same time feels your current requests are not important to reach that level, but can't say that directly without hurt feelings.

so u wouldn't dismiss it out of hand that this is totally her problem. nor is throwing out the watch the answer because that's not the nuance that she's expressing. just a black/white view that she's too busy no matter what you have to say.

so it's some crossed wires between you two.
I can suggest email during day but text for emergencies? then she can apply filters and notifications as necessary.

on the same token though teaching parents technology or answering their questions is known to be extremely frustrating so she is not the only one.

Texts are good so passengers in a car can communicate with others outside the car without bothering the driver / other passengers with a conversation they'd rather not overhear.

Agreed.

I've even shut off the ringer on my desk work phone. As a result I now can use call display and not disturb my co-workers when I decide to avoid certain callers (and let it ring thru to voice mail).

So far I've been doing this for over a year and no complaints from bosses etc.

I agree, i don't have a smartphone, and i don't text.

Called my son tonight to see how he is doing, I just wanted to hear his voice.

When I'm at work I set do not disturb and only allow priority (work) through with vibrate/volume. Notifications still populate the watch and I can check or ignore them at my leasure.

Seems as though she should understand the technology she has purchased or not use it at all. Blaming you for her own lack of self control, well...
