Champ XL Oil Filter Efficiency

Here's another good video on the subject filter series. This one uses a unique plate instead of a leaf spring or coil spring:

If I’m reading the date code correctly, it’s basically the same as the other video but off by 10 days? This makes me hesitant to grab from RA if that is where the supply is from on this YT’ers two videos made within the last year.

I am looking for a good option outside of the updated Ultra, but to risk buying an older stock alternative makes me somewhat uncomfortable as well. That’s nearly 5 years old. Might be perfectly fine but how was it stored? I’ve got 1 vehicle. I’ll pay extra for fresh stock locally that I can verify production dates, etc.

This one also has a different bypass valve design from the one in the post #4 video. The date codes between the two are nearly the same. Since Champ Labs makes oil filters for other companies, it may be that Champ just slaps their label on some of those filters, and that's why there are design difference between Champ filter models.

It is but then again it’s from 2017. A lot of changes since then.
That's the latest info they have on the Champ Labs website. So if things have changed, they have not made any documentation updates.

Yeah, wondering where the YT guy got these Champ filters. Probably RockAuto if I had to guess.

I know when I bought some cases of 12 of the regular Champs of the eBay some months back for my Nissans and Ram 1500, there were cases of XLs available too. They were a bit more $ obviously. Lil too rich for me. LOL

I am in the same boat as far as looking for something other than the new Ultra. So far the Royal Purple is my new favorite, that being said I like the design of the Chinese made filters like Ecogard and Premium Guard. Aside from those the Champ XL has looked rock solid every time I have seen one even though I am not a fan of the center tube louvers.

What makes the Royal Purple filter any different than the rest besides the purple color? With all the consolidation going on things change quickly.

Still wire backed, still 2 ply synthetic media, either Ecore or metal center tube, still made by Champion Labs. Here’s to hoping First Brands doesn’t screw them up next…

6 or more at royalpurpledirect, common sizes $11.99 (when you buy 6 or more), free shipping over $50. Other alternatives are Donaldson Blue or Fleetguard Stratapore (if they make one to fit your application), or Amsoil EaO (cost a little more). Or, go the opposite direction with the (apparently improving) Pure One & shorten OCI to factory length.

Let me know who you emailed that actually responded, I’ve asked on Champion Labs website about the standard cheap jobber filters what the efficiency and bypass rating is on the PH500, no response yet.
Good news, the First Brands tech support email worked! The Champ PH500 is 90% efficient at 20 microns (a little lower than quoted above), bypass is 16-28 PSI (good for newer GM/Ford, not older LS like mine), and, best of all, NO COMBO VALVE! Replaced with a "temperature variable bypass spring" valve so that bypass is higher at colder temperatures. Sounds unusual, but straight from First Brands tech support.

"Temperature variable bypass spring" ... hummm, that's a new one. Wonder if it's a "clicker valve" - need to find a cut open of a more recent production filter.

Pricing is actually pretty darn good if you order from RockAuto. I use the look-up feature on the Champ Filtration website. For some unknown reason, RockAuto does not have the filters categorized so the filters are not showing up when you search by Year/Make/Model.

Found the same with searching for topic model. Just add to an existing order, use a 5% off code and hope to get a relatively recent production line part!
