Ceiling Mounted Bike Storage

I need to hang two bikes - a men's hardtail mountain bike (19" frame) and a road bike (56" frame) in my garage. All of the walls are taken so my ceiling is the only option. I do live in an area where occasional earthquakes happen (
Is a system like this worthwhile, or should I just purchase the $9 HF model?

I just go with the $1 hooks. I can put mine up and out of the way without having to stand on anything and they don't hang down far enough to get in the way. Unless you have a really high ceiling the hooks would work well. It would take a serious earthquake to knock a bike off a hook. So much that the house would be in bad shape and the bikes would be the last thing to worry.

I never gave earthquakes any thought. Aside from convince I don't see the AMZN bike hanger being worth the investment, unless you have a very high ceiling. I use the $1 hooks and have done so for years. My garage ceiling is 10' high.

I have a setup that is like the HF one, but the brand name was RAD. Mine was a 2-pack. I use it for our tandem bike. I think we have 12' garage ceilings. It works fine...

The only big benefit with the RAD one you linked to is that you don't have to put a board on the ceiling to screw the mounts into. Some of the cheaper hangers also use a thinner cord that may or may not work for you.

I don't like just using hooks. The hassle with hooks IMO is that you have to keep the wheel from turning as you unhook it, or the hook will want to catch on a spoke. And for me, hooks on my ceiling would require a ladder. How frequently will you be using it?

I also have a motorized "Garage Gator" device that can hoist up a number of bikes... that's another story though.

For bikes that don't get used much (or if you had a low ceiling) I used 3 $1 hooks, 2 for the wheels as usual and 1 more off to the side so you can push the bike up flat to the ceiling. You have to use a ladder and you might have to place the 3rd hook to catch the saddle or stem or handlebar, the fork will turn when you push it up so you just have to see what works. If you want it real close to the ceiling take off a pedal and rotate the handlebars 90 degrees.

Unless you have an ailment which would make lifting the bikes a problem the $1 hooks work great. I actually like the "$1.50" hooks with the larger threads . 3/8 vs 5/16 inch doesn't sound like a big deal but I find the 3/8 inch are MUCH sturdier once installed. You will want to pre-drill a pilot hole, though.

In my garage, I had two bikes hanging from ceiling hooks. Ducking, if I remembered, to get under the hanging bikes was a nuisance and I took them down. I recently installed two of these very nice racks in a 7 foot square closet with room to spare. They are wall mounted and I know you're short on wall space but these racks allow the bike to swing from side to side in either direction. Perhaps that would enable you to swing the bike out of the wall space that you need to access.

That works too.. bike lifts like this one from HF are pretty slick and not that expensive. Sure beats getting em down from a ceiling hook.
