I'm the second owner of an '04 Ram 1500 4.7. I received it as a gift with 44k it now has 47k and I decided to take out the baffle to take a look inside of it and found it to be full of sludge, not just the feed neck but under the VC itself. The plan is to put in a quart of MMO and dump at 500mi. then put in 5 quarts of PP and 1 of MMO for the next OCI. Seeing as how the 4.7 is a known sludger (due to the feed neck design not the engine itself) I'm going to do 4k/4mo OCIs with the MMO treatment being done once a year.

I can't think of anything else I should do to clean her up and maintain her from this point on if anyone has any experience you are welcome to chime in.

Your on the right path with using the MMO. I'd actually run the MMO for a full 2-3k OCI a few times then switch to adding it 500 miles before the OCI. I would check the PCV valve as it has to be gunking up for a reason.

Just an FYI - I was thinking of something else with your topic.

Check the PCV... Clean as necessary with brake cleaner or replace with OEM.

I would get an engine flush product and run that then change the oil with MMO added to the new fill and a new filter.

But glad that isn't the case :)

I would do a few passes of MMO. First one will help with the heaviest [censored], then the next one should clear out anything that's left. A third pass might be nice just to verify everything is gone.

Well, you certainly got my attention with your title!

A few runs of MMO, for your full OCI, will hopefully get everything right. Don't need to 'overthink it' more than that - MMO is easy to get and safe.

I'd use Pennzoil Yellow bottle and MMO.
The new PYB has extra cleaners, and is cheaper for the short duration you plan on. No benefit to synthetic.
This will take some time, and bunches of oil changes.

Thanks for all the responses, I needed a creative title so people would read it, figured an innuendo would work

The reason I want to use synthetics even on such a short interval is due to the increased breakdown resistance and they typically have more additives. PP if I'm not mistaken has quite a bit more in the add pack department compared to PYB if I remember correctly. The new PYB does have the best profile I've seen compared to other conventionals by a mile though, I wouldn't hesitate using it on a non-sludger any time.

Isn't there some refit for the PCV system on this engine? If not, this will be a perpetually occurring event. Plan on routine treatment.

Extend heat hose to wrap around mayonnaise factory. It might help.

Use Pennzoil Ultra if you can get it in GTMO!

To my knowledge there is no new PCV, Chrysler came out with the baffle as the "fix", but as we all know the only thing that did was fix the amount of complaints Chrysler received due to the average joe not knowing any better and not lifting the baffle to find that the buildup was still occurring.

And yes, I know this will be a reoccurring problem which is why I'm trying to clean it out as best as possible and then maintain it like I would have to begin with if I had it from new. I'll probably have a shop tear it down once its back stateside if I'm not content with the MMO treatments.

You have no idea! I want to use it so I can use the truck as a case study but they don't have any down here yet and I'm sure they wont for a while. PP is the "best" stuff they've got down here although they got a shipment of RP a couple weeks ago so who knows maybe they'll surprise me with a shipment of PU.

They do have Edge though...hmmm

My apologies I didn't know you were actually in GTMO. I thought you put that there as a joke.

Pennzoil Platinum is a darn good oil and IMO Ultra while supposed to be better can't be that much better. Platinum is a super strong cleaner.

Give it a try.. And take lots of pictures!

Someone mentioned PP.

Id say, if PP doesnt make leaks, that will clean even better than MMO.

Better than a full-blown ARX Treatment!
