I have a 98 Volvo S70 with 305K on it now. It has been fed a steady diet of 10W30 and 5W30 its whole life and still runs great with 7.5K Dino changes and 12K synthetic changes. I recently noticed oil consumption (1 quart/2K) and tried running M1 HM10W30 and it didn't do much better. I tried Rotella T-6 5W40 and maybe it went to 1 quart/2.5K.

I picked up some Castrol GTX HM 10W40 at Walmart on clearance for $7/5gallon jug. I am now at 1 quart/4.5K miles! I know it is a little on the thick side being a 40wt, but wow this is great. No loss in mileage or power either. Nice to see a product work as advertised. I wonder if this is a synth vs. dino experience on HM? I might try M1 10W40HM to see if I get the same results.

Castrol produces some fine oils, even though other manufactures do the same I think as you have seen Castrol can, and has formulated a better product than Mobil 1. You can also look up the specifications between these oils 10w-40, 10w30 etc Castrol, and Mobil 1 each may be sp close to the specs that any difference would be so minor as to not be accountable or the "fix"

Castrol still getting the bad rap when they are now producing some of the best oils ever...

Another M1 bash on the way!

The 40 is kind of thick, even for summer. GTX HM does help, it worked well for me. I'd try the 10w30...for winter obviously.

i'm thinking of trying M1 0W40 in the winter...i'm in upstate NY, so I need the lower weight.

I'd recommend Mobil 1 5w30 Hi-Miles. 5w30 is the same in cold as 0w-40, and it has the HM additives. M1 0w-40 is notorious for burning-off.

Tig I was not bashing m1... take a deep breath, I was only saying Castrol performed in this situation Castrol performed outstanding... m1 may beat Castrol in some applications, however in this particular application Castrol come out on top... Don't take ever sentence or mention of m1 as a bash from me.... however Castrol does get a bad rap, and is always given an alternative just as you done with the 40w.

Now don't hit me with the over one million miles of combined experience LOL.. or 30 years etc... I'm not bashing m1

Castrol GTX High Mileage 10W-40 is one of the thickest 40 weights out there. It has a viscosity of 16.0 @ 100c.

Don't you know, you're only allowed to ~praise~ Mobil 1.

Anointing one's self the defender of the frail Mobil oil corp is one sure way to get attention here.

Mobil 1 is the "Anointed One?" I thought that was somebody Else. :)

And i also had thought MaxLife produced a better HM Oil. Something about GTX Hi-Mi's Additive pack not being "Advanced" - ?

0W40 burns off quickly...[censored], I already bought some. I would have thought the 40 side would help that issue.

A sudden change in oil consumption, if not paired with a change in driving condition/style or other known plausible reason, suggests something other than an oil-related cause.

7.5K mile dino and 12K mile synthetic intervals are UOA backed? (just want to make sure this isn't a mechanical issue due to increased wear)

0W40 does not "burn off quickly" ,you going to listen to a guy that despise M1?

i can tell you from experience it does not burn off it may shear some in certain applications but that's it,0w40 is a great oil.

nice factual info there AJ still at hey?

In any event, I'm surprised that no one mentioned 305,000 miles. Way to go! I;d like to get that out of our cars.

I am using Castrol Syntec 5W20 now, but may switch to Pennzoil Ultra to be protected by the 500,000 mile guarantee. Unfortunately, the only places that carry it here in Orlando are 1 Wal Mart on the west side of town (30 mile round trip) and Pennzoil Quick Lube Shops. Pennzoil needs to get their act together concerning Ultra. I won't be switching until they do.

I did run one cycle of Mobil 1 5W20 in both cars and the engines were noticeably noisier in both cars.

Guys....

That is all I'm going to say. (the "players" KNOW whom I'm taking to)

Any thing further is going to become vacation time....

PM me if you have ANY comments.

not a whole lot thinner as you can see i can't see what the problem would have been.

Not in my old oil-burning Saturn SL2. It slowed consumption to about the same rate as Valvoline MaxLife HM 10W-40 did. IIRC, the car drank ML HM 10w30 (as well as any conventional 5/10W-30), but slowed considerably when I switched to the 10W-40. I then tried German Castrol 0w30 and Mobil 1 0W-40 hoping both would have some cleaning effect. I doubt they did much cleaning of the ring pack, but the consumption was controlled to less than one quart per 3000 miles whereas most 30 weight oils burned at about one quart for every 2000 miles. This was during extended, sustained highway driving through Pennsylvania...

It could have been the base oils, the adds or such. This is the reason why you really can NOT go by numbers or syn this, HM that or anything.

Got to go with what works in a certain engine. Some people report that brand x works in their engine and others have "issues" with the same brand.

And in all honesty even if the engine is "nosier" with brand x it prob is going to last and run the same then if it had brand y that made the engine "quieter"....
