Thanks WM so what's this 1R-1808? a P551808 in the Donaldson version? am i following you?

The 1R-1808 you show is the CAT version produced at the JV in Illinois. If you were to cut the P551808 there are supposed to be cosmetic differences so that you can't say they are the same.

Donaldson and Wix have a joint venture plant in Mexico that are putting out filters with either name on them.

According to my source in Donaldson, there is no truth to that statement.

Good idea. I'll just put heavier springs on that side to keep the truck from leaning!

Ok so it shares it's filtering efficiency?

Damon, do you tend to use dealer/tractor brand replacement filters or do you use "aftermarket" sources like Wix, Baldwin, etc.?

That's good question we do complain about the price of these OEM CAT and AGCO Challenger filters I'm actually in the process of crossing and doing pricing comparisons over to Fleet guard StrataPores filters as we have a dealer just a few miles away vs getting the OEM's shipped in.

only down side is FG doesn't make all the applications we need, for instance the big HYD and trans filters in my above pic NO ONE can cross that one so i've been forced to stay OEM with that one, same with some of our fuel filters primary's seem to go but the water separators don't alway cross.

also thinking of checking availability on the NAPA XD filters as their a fleet full synthetic design, nice looking filter, Anybody have info on these filters?
http://www.fleetfilter.com/filter/wix-oil-filters/57744XD.html

for now were OEM for warranty purposes on the new 975 but the others im checking on crossing them this winter as i'll have the time..

i have a FG master catalog they sent me so i have lots of reading to do.

We cross filters all day. The ideal is a direct cross in the Donaldson site, but sometimes it isn't listed, so we go to Cummins, Wix or Baldwin and back to Donaldson, then double check. There are errors in the databases. Also search catalogs on my hard drive.

Sometimes it takes a Google search to come up with it. Just need to make sure in the end that they are really crosses.

Thanks. I manage a tiny fleet of mostly John Deere ag. equipment at my workplace. I used to shop for "cheaper" filters (mostly NAPA), but like you stated, there was always a few that they didn't have.

In a few other cases, the NAPA/WIX filters just didn't seem right. One Kubota hyd. filter cost $38 and weighed a ton. The NAPA replacement costs about $9, weighed almost nothing, and didn't instill confidence (hyd. systems are so sensitive).

Last year at our local MI CAT service center they were tearing into a huge excavator engine that was ruined from the installation of a wrong micron aftermarket fuel filter.

I got tired of multiple sourcing filters and/or worrying about correct applications and now just go with the JD stuff. Our discount makes them tolerable ($) compared to NAPA and I sleep better. As you know, you can never take this fluid/filter stuff for granted and it seems a bit harder with commercial equipment vs. automotive....just like Widman warns about above.

Thanks for sharing the pictures and info.

I see..that's the thing when your working with AND responsible for 1/4 million dollar pieces of equipment or any dollar amount you want the best readily available and correct fit parts you can get so you need at least OEM equivalent or above that when it comes to servicing thats how we operate, we have too, mistakes are very costly and could put you out of business very quickly.

for now like i stated were still OEM..

no problem on the pics thought members would like to see.

Agco, Fendt, Claas all have ridiculous filter prices. Through the OEM, they want like $60 for the centrifugal bypass our 665B takes but I crossed that to a Fleetguard for less than $20. We were quoted $300 for an outer air filter on our Fendt, crossed that to a Fleetguard that cost like $50. I was going to change the Claas hyraulic filter on our Lexion and I crossed that filter which was over $100 to a Fleetguard thats less than $50. I wish it were easier to cross some of those fancy hydraulic filters they have as those are pricey ones.

Sometimes crosses aren't available because of the agreements. There are CAT filters where certain aspects were patented by the CAT/Donaldson JV. The JV then has to decide when to license that patent, even to Donaldson. There are some Komatsu filters, made by Cummins that are not available by agreement. You have to go to Komatsu.

There is a hydraulic fork lift filter that Donaldson makes for a bunch of fork lifts. the Donaldson number is on the Toyota one, but it is "not available" in Donaldson by agreement with Toyota. But you cross the other brand's filters and get the number. Donaldson makes most of the JD filters, and can sell them, but not compete price-wise. Lots of weird things going on. Certain patented filters are all made by the patent holder and sold under different brands. Just change the laser print and boxes.

There was an air filter made by FG that was available as Donaldson, but the price was $80 higher than the FG version. Eventually Donaldson discontinued selling it, and FG raised their price by $100.
