Hello:

As I said I'd do in another thread, here are the Blackstone VOAs for three different Castrol Edge Syntec oils. I posted pictures but will let you draw your own conclusions.

Here are my comments first:

1) All three have incredibly high flash points, the 0W-40 German Castrol topping out at 465 degrees.
2) The 0W-40 German Castrol has titanium in it.
3) The 0W-30 Begium Castrol is much thinner than I expected, a cST at 100c of just 10.83
4) The 0W-40 German Castrol is thinner than I expected, a cST of 12.21 at 100c

Enjoy,

Scott

Thank-you for the oil analysis!

One other aspect is that the 0W-20 Syntec only measured at 7.89 cSt @ 100*C, which seems low for a 20-weight and might be closer to the new 16-grade viscosity.

Also suspect that Castrol is heading in the direction of thinner viscosity fluids as most manufactures are.

To be a 20 grade oil it must have a HTHSV of 2.6cP. The KV100 could drop below 7cSt and it wouldn't matter.
Nevertheless as point of interest the Edge with Ti that PQIA tested had a KV100 of 8.75cSt. Are the two Castrol 0W-20 oils that much different?

The KV100 spec's of all three oil grades are lower than what's claimed in the Castrol PDSs. My thinking is that Blackstone needs to check the calibration of their KV100 testing equipment.

This is disturbing on the 0W-40. The SAE J300 states that a 40 grade ranges from 12.5cSt's - 16.29cSt's.

This 0W-40 is apparently a 0W-30.

I doubt that the 0W-30 is pulling down a dynamic viscosity of 3.5cP's at 150ºC either. Disappointing to say the least.

Hello:

I'm going to toss in a pair of UOAs in this discussion. These are for my 2003 BMW 330Ci and my wife's 2006 MB c230. Both cars have been owned by us since new, are not abused, nor have they suffered any kind of engine problem.

For both vehicles, the latest oil sample is with German Castrol 0W-30. The previous sample for BMW was Motul 300V 5W-40, for the MB Motul X-Max 5W-40. In all cases the oil was thinner than what I expected and what the PDS stated. At the time I figured all the samples were indicating shear.

It's just an FWIW in the context of the VOAs I posted to start this thread.

Yep, it could drop as far below 7 as 6.9 and still be a 20.

Thanks for taking the time/money to do this, bought a bunch of the 0w-40 when it was on sale at WM for 16$ a jug so this is good to see.

They probably will, they retested mine twice without me even asking

Thanks, Scott! awaiting re-run results...

I really have to decide between GC 0/40 and Pennzoil Euro ultra 5/40 ...
OR I guess I can use PU 5/40 in summer and GC 0/40 in winter, I guess, on the 330Ci.

Yeah, this needs to be rerun. But if rerun shows the same, then something is wrong with these Castrol's.
It seems that 0W40 is precisely where old 0W30 GC was. Cst at 12.21.
I do not know what to make out of these VOA, except either Blackstone messed it up, or Castrol is seriously scamming consumers.
