Castrol Edge EP - HTHS Values

I think certain certs require a minimum HTHS. Like ACEA A3/B4 requiring over 3.5. That might be a good starting place.

The values look pretty typical of the listed grades.

And?
The 0w20 Castrol EDGE Extended Performance meets some tough European specs so Castrol (BP) mustn't be to worried about the HTTS. I would never go 25K on any oil (including Amsoil or HPL) so I stick with oils available at Walmart, Amazon, AA, AZ etc... I would put Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 0w20 at the top of the list of non- boutique oils (along with Mobil 1 Extended Performance and ESP) and for my typical 6 to 7.5K OCI it will do fine I'm sure.

Has anyone seen any of the GF-7, 25K oil in the wild? Walmarts around here have stopped carrying the EP in the stores. Online might still be clearing out the old GF-6.

I am a huge fan of high HTHS. But I don't base my oil choice only on HTHS. When 0W-xx shears, and it will, remember that the HTHS drops too. In fact it tracks the viscosity loss. In other words, the more the oil shears, the lower the HTHS becomes. It is not unusual for an HTHS of 3.5 to drop nearly half a point over time, and that's without fuel dilution.

We often get wrapped around the axle on specifications, and many 0W-xx oils have great specs. As we also know, shear induced viscosity loss on an oil full of VII's means a 0W-40 and a straight 40 do not perform the same way under extreme loads.

For those of us pushing 80, 90 or even 100HP per cylinder, it is a very good idea to choose an oil that is truly capable.

I am no lubrication guru here, and neither was my dad. I like the 0W oils myself and I think with my 3-to-5-thousand-mile oci's, the shear thing is probably not an issue on my OEM stock car, even if it does shear some it really wouldn't matter in this case. Anyhow, my dad used to say the larger the distance between the bottom number and the top number on the viscosity rating, the more or faster the oil will shear. In other words, a 0W-30 will shear faster than a 10W-30. Also, straight weight oil doesn't shear as they don't use VI improvers in them. What would your thoughts be on this stuff I just said @Cujet ?

Castrol's been using the Kurt Orbahn in a lot of their marketing the last several years including prior version. They must use a more shear stable VM. If you look at all the used oil analysis of Mobil 1 5w30 and Castrol EDGE 5w30 you can see real world results of this. No idea what the new Mobil 1 Advanced Clean will be like.

This might help. I was under the same impression.

I have the black jug of the 10,000 MI 0w-20 and it has the gf7 rating. Picked it up at walmart. According to Walmart online the Castrol EDGE Extended Performance is supposed to have gf7 but I cannot find it on the Shelf.
