Interesting to note that the HHR even though it is assembled in Mexico has more Domestic content(37%) than any of the BMW's offered for sale in America, INCLUDING the BMW's assembled in Spartanburg.

Not a fan of the Ranger I owned, it was pooh compared to my 4.3 S-10.
Not fan of VW.

LS2JSTS is dead nuts on! Read his posts everyone and see the FACTS not what you think or want to believe. I was very surprised to see so many Lexus' with 0% domestic content. The best point he make is that there is a big difference between assembling a car with local USA parts versus just importing most of the parts and putting the car together....by doing that the only jobs created are the few in the assembly plant.

I really can't say I hate any one auto manufacturer, although Toyota has nothing that appeals to me whatsoever. I do hate riced out cars with little [censored] can exhausts and massive wings. Those are annoying beyond belief.

I don't buy the premise that I'm obligated to buy the car with the most domestic content. We live in a global economy, with global competition. Our economy depends heavily on trade. I have money invested in foreign markets as well as the US market. Several companies I've worked for had significant collaboration and investment with foreign companies. How many US companies go out of their way to "buy American"? They certainly don't go out of their way to "employ American".

GM and Chrysler have already received plenty of my money in the form of bailouts. So they already have a noncompetitive advantage over "foreign" companies. Why should I grant them another? The "buy American" crowd is essentially arguing against free market competition and for the buddy-buddy system. As far as I'm concerned, US companies can compete for my business just like any other company.

robespierre, please understand, buy what you want and suits your tastes and needs. I honestly do agree with you...competition has been good for the industry no matter if it comes from the far east or the EU. But when someone makes a statement of fact such as can be read below...expect a full and thorough rebuff with the facts.

In reality, if the sentence above were to reflect reality instead of some uninformed posters idea of the way things are...it would read...

"A couple of foreign makes have plants in the US which include engine and transmission plants, so the few others just assemble them here from components that are actually manufactured elsewhere"

Even if GM and Ford have some assembly in Canada and Mexico, have you ever been there? Canada and Mexico have more American cars on their roads than the US!

How many American cars do you see on Japanese roads?

I agree with everyone on the stupid Toyota exhaust 2" from ground problem. The RX330 has it too, just not quite as badly.

440Magnum - I hear you on the XBs and other POS econoboxes that people treat like racecars. It's the #1 reason I like driving a vehicle with a good bit of power, so when they try to cut me off, I can just mash the throttle and force them to merge behind me.

Just a quick point... yeah, we subsidized GM and Chrysler with a bailout, but almost every other foreign company doesn't have to worry about paying their employees' (and retirees') health insurance!

American companies in every industry are placed at a HUGE disadvantage because we saddle healthcare costs on the employer and, to a lesser extent, the employee.

We had a chance to deal with that, but the discussion went about as good as this thread.

Thank you for that. We in this country are blessed with perhaps the best variety of automotive machinery out there, in terms of vastness of choice in power, style, brand, etc.

It's not good enough that we can enjoy what we have and can happy for others who enjoy what they have. We instead have to put others down (or the machines they choose to drive). We should be building each other up rather than tearing each other down.

Agreed! And I've never understood the obsession with "percent domestic content." Bah. Ford, GM, and Chrysler are domestic, everything else is foreign regardless of assembly point and percentage ownership by Fiat

Buy what you like and stop worrying about whether the alternator is Bosch, Denso, or Delphi.

And the whole "cars I hate" thing is more of a fun exercise than true hate anyway. Except for me and Toyota... that's real...

Good points, indeed. It's just that people get upset when these foriegn purchases cost American jobs, that is where most of the emotions come from.

The Global Economy is not all its cracked up to be and it is taught in schools that it is so great. Well, my idea of a global economy is building our stuff here using USA workers and selling abroad..of course than the profits would not be as high. China is doing it right! They build and sell worldwide with cheap labor in their country.

People forget the US did bail out Honda and Toyota, Each hybrid sold of each model, think Prius and Civic/Accord hybrid up to 60K units per manufacturer were subsidized to the tune of 3400 per car, so each manufacutuer was subsidized to the tune over $205 million each of US taxpayers money.
