Car 'suddenly' consumes a lot of oil since last OC

Car is 06 pt cruiser 2.4NA
In its history since I owned it, it used different oil:
Mobil 1 HM, Mobil 5k, PP, Castrol gtx, Oreilly syn, it never consumed any oil during the OCI.

The last fill is Castrol Gtx, then I switched to PPPP, the car starts to consumes a lot oil, about 1qt per 2k miles.

All the oil are 5w30 as the OM suggests.

What may cause this and what should I do?

Any thoughts and suggestion is highly appreciated.

Change the PCV valve and see if that helps. If not, change back to GTX and see if it still burns, if not, then your car just doesn't like PPPP
 
Process of elimination. Start with looking for any leaks and check PCV valve. It is no uncommon for a spike in oil consumption occur when switching brands due to chemistry differences. I was told this is called "seating".
 
Had the same thing happen with PPPP.

Haven't used it since, and never will again.

In my case, castrol edge has less than half the consumption rate, so why mess with it.

Before buying parts just go back to whatever you were using before. See if consumption decreases.
Sometimes switching brands causes consumption. It will stop eventually. I had this happen when going from pennzoil to M1.
It's not brand specific. It can happen with any brand when switching.
Fwiw I use a different brand every interval. I haven't noticed any consumption in years though. And I use all the majors.
Just go back to castrol and fugfetaboudit

This!!
My Subaru faithfully used 1/2 qt every 3k. Got a good deal on Castrol full synthetic and it used 1 qt in the same 3k.

When there are more than three Ps in an oil's name, it will be consumed by the engine like crazy. :P Perhaps PPPP doesn't have the proper amount of seal conditioners -- I don't know.

It could be a new leak that has developed or valve-stem oils seals that have been worn. Idle the car with hot engine at full stop for two minutes. Have someone looking at the exhaust and then take off with regular acceleration. If smoke is seen during takeoff, it's valve-stem oil seals.
 
No leak at drain plug and filter.
I almost used different oil each OC, and no consumption occurred.

This is the first time I notice oil consumption in this car.

I plan to use MObil1 HM next time, see if it helps.
 
I recently switched my 2005 Honda Odyssey from VWB to PPPP and I am having the same issue I am on my second OCI with PPPP consuming about 1qt every 1,500 miles. Van never used near that much in the past perhaps .5 qt every 6000 miles. With that said I thought it was perhaps just the PPPP cleaning junk left over from years of conventional and somehow having that affect but I am starting to think twice. Not saying it is the PPPP but its funny you bring this up because I just jumped on this morning to ask if anyone else was having this issue. I think I am going to start topping off with MSHM and see if anything changes.
 
At a difference in consumption like that it might be cheaper to just dump the oil and go back.to one that consumed much less.

I don't miss topping off a quart every 2,000 miles. I'm very much liking topping off a quart every 4,000-5,000 miles by contrast.

Never again, Pennzoil.... Sorry. Not when I can just use a different oil and cut consumption in half and reduce the cost of an oci by a measurable amount.
 
Checked the PCV this morning, it functions properly.
The hose connected to PCV only has a small amount of oil, no oil dripping. I think it is normal, isn't it? the PCV regulates the oil escaping from the PCV, but there is still some that can escape from the crankcase.?
 
I have used old PP in the past, nothing happened.
No sure if the pppp is different from the old one, which causes the consumption,
or the car developed some new leaks when passing 100K.
 
A restrictive air filter can cause the engine to ingest oil. Is the air filter older than 3 years? If the air filter is causing the problem, you will find the throttle plate is covered in oil.

the air filter is almost new, it is a KN filter.
throttle body is clean, I checked it recently when I changed the valve cover gasket.

Not a big fan of self oiled air filters.
Restricted air flow from over oiling can have adverse effects on vacuum and PVC systems.
Time to stop changing oils and go with the one that works for you/your car.
It's reasonable to assume that your engine will consume more oil as it ages and will
vary with driving conditions. An extra 1/2 qt more or less should not worry you.
"Within operating range" is most important.
