My neighbors are real jerks. They had a junk car parked on the public street for like 2 weeks unmoved. Called cops no result. So I walked out discretely, perhaps not discretely enough, took a pic of the sitting car with my cell and the ring of dirt around it from weeks of sitting. Sent it to our nuisance report link on the city website. Got results.

Well, one must have seen me. I was mowing my lawn in the back yard, with no fence, and one was out smoking, they started popping shots of me on their phone from their yard.

So, is it legal to take pics of "anything at all in plain sight" from one's own property? Thats what my coworker says. They say that if a person can stand in their yard and see something ....they can thus take a picture of it in "plain sight". That included me, my lawnmower, my trees....whatever at all.

I'm sure states differ but this is pretty generic. My state is Wisconsin.

Sadly, I'm starting to think that this is "legal". Heck, they might even be perfectly legal sitting there all day snapping away. I suppose security cameras on homes capture segments of other folks yards 24 hours a day simply by coincidence.

Honestly who cares? Unless they are threatening you or are doing something with the pics...who is going to go and check their camera? That would require a search warrant...you get my drift?? You are wasting valuable time on this earth over nothing.

I don't want an America where someone can report me for taking a picture of someone..do you??? That's not what brave men and women fought and died for.

Seems like you didn't gain anything from snitching except an enemy in your neighbors.

Is there a reasonable expectation of privacy? Mowing a yard which is unfenced in a subdivision/neighborhood is 'no' territory to that question.

Chances are, this is perfectly legal.

In our town, a vehicle must be moved every 24 hours. Of course, unless someone reports it, they don't enforce it. If reported, the cops will come and mark the tires, and put a warning on it to move. If not moved in 24 hours then they will have it towed.

Oh beleive me, no love lost , there were no bridges burned....none to burn. The car was falling to pieces literally on the street in the curbside between our driveways. Stuff piled inside it rotting. This wasnt snitching, this was trying to have basic ordinances enforced.

Mom mom has had neighbors nark on her for fairly petty things. When she tried to find information from the authority, she is told a neighbor has complained. This has happened a few times. So don't jump to conclusions that you were seen.

I could see if they were leaving the car for months. But a couple of weeks is no biggie.

It was 7-10 short of a month. And it was going nowhere fast. Rotten inside, window open partially even in hard rains.

Marijuana is harmless; it's the cigarettes that should be illegal.

The partial combustion (smoking) of either leafy substance creates a cocktail of carcinogenic tar which is deposited into your lungs.

I would have just had it towed if it was bothering me that bad....

But I would be worried about animals and rats living in there if it never moves....

Same here, except the part about the cops coming and giving a warning. They send the tow truck.

As for the OP's particular situation, I have to say it's always better to get along with your neighbours. They are not your family, you don't have to feed them dinner, but really, you should have talked to them first. Explain how you felt it was an eyesore and inquire about why they haven't moved it ... maybe they were waiting for the pay check at the end of the month to fix it.

I am left wondering why a photo was necessary to get the authorities to take action. Where I'm from the phone call would have been 100% effective. But next time, maybe get up at sunup instead of making yourself a target. I hope you didn't prance out there hoping they would see you. If that's the case, well, you wanted war, and now you have it. What happens next calls for Strategy, not wondering what to do next.

Instead of someone who would watch over your property for you when you are away, you now have someone who might phone their criminal classmates from High School the day you drive off on vacation. It's not the better solution to the car problem.

I suggest you still try to talk to them, apologies for phoning the authorities, take a conciliatory approach. If there is any improvement in your mutual relations, it is for the better. People live places for a long, long time.

Did it ever occur to you to just go nicely ask them to move it?

You fretted over their property until you got what you wanted and now you are mad because they took a picture of you mowing your yard. You are lucky if that is all they do.

So... what ever happened to the member that had floodlights shining on his neighbors house.

Then the neighbor retaliated by ringing the doorbell and running away.

Then it escalated with vandalizing the lights, then trees planted, then security cameras, and that's where I stopped following the saga.
