Can I run a GF-6 Oil in an older vehicle?

Hi all,

I have a 2005 Lexus RX330 - Its currently on its second OCI with Valvoline Restore and Protect in 10w40 (we have this weight for R&P in Australia). I prefer running a lower winter rating oil in the colder months (which are approaching). In order to keep up with the Valvoline R&P and go the full four oil changes with it, I would like to run the R&P in 5w30 for winter, but note it is rated as a GF-6 oil.

I'm concerned that it may cause harm as I have mostly run API SN oils.

I don't know. The 5W-30 might be too thin and run out the top because your car is upside down .

does it even get remotely cold enough to need the switch? if the lowest recorded temp of -2.8°C is correct I wouldn't switch to a 5W-30 at all.

I could use GF6 oil in my 93 F150 but I've settled on a better oil.

API SP is backwards compatible with API SN. Valvoline Restore and Protect 10W-40 sold in Australia is the same formula as the other Restore and Protect products, just with a higher viscosity rating.

Conclusion: you will be fine running 5W-30, don't even worry about it.

Just keep running 10W-40. I live where it gets pretty cold in winter, the Volvo S80 T6 with R&P 10W-40 in it starts just fine after sitting outside overnight even in the middle of winter.

It’s even had 15W-40 HDEO in it before, also with zero issues in cold mornings.

Just run the 10W-40 year round. Australia’s climate really doesn’t require anything thinner.
