Cable hookup question

I'm FINALLY planning a purchase of a new TV after watching a 20" Proscan for 18 years.

I have an older Yamaha 2095 receiver that has optical audio ports.
The new TV and bluray player have HDMI and optical.
My plan is to use HDMI from the bluray to the TV and use the optical from the bluray to the receiver. Will this work and still be able to get 5.1 DD and DTS?

Also, if I decide to keep Cox cable (planning on ditching them, but just in case), can I run an optical from the Cox box (it does have one) to the 2095, and HDMI to the from the Cox box to the bluray and still get sound? The bluray has dual HDMI inputs.

I guess if the question of whether there will be a conflict between the optical cables and the HDMI cables?

Its going to be a heck of a day when this all comes together! I can't wait!

I'm thinking you could be able to run your cable and blu-ray player to the TV via HDMI, and then run an optical audio from the TV to the receiver. At least that is how I did it before when I had an old Sony DVD player/speaker system, but I'm not sure if every TV has an optical out.

I have my DVD/BR Player set up like that. That way I don't need to have the receiver on to watch a movie.

HDMI from DVD/BR to TV
Optical Out from DVD/BR to Surround (Yamaha RXV596) - no HDMI.

HDMI from Satellite Receiver to TV
Digital out to Surround

Make sure your TV is an optical "input." Mine is an "output." I have it connect to the surround receiver so I can listen to Pandora, etc., via the TV instead of the Blu-Ray player - had the TV first and find it easier to use.

Works great, no conflicts.

A word of caution: most TVs will downmix the source and only output 2-channel stereo via the TV optical out, so you won't be getting 5.1 surround sound. This is due to some stupid copyright protection. The TV optical out will only pass 5.1 signal for content that comes into the TV on a standard coax (like OTA antenna), but not content that comes into the TV via HDMI or component inputs.

Yes, this will work. Send video from various devices to your TV using HDMI cables, and send audio from various devices to the receiver using optical cables.

Yup. A new TV will have multiple inputs so there should be no conflict.
