Buying Oil at Walmart

Wal-Mart doesn't carry any of the oils that I've ever used in my Forester, although I might pick up some M1 HM there for my next change. Although, I usually get fed up with the long lines and slow cashiers and leave empty handed. I do try to stop there for the Pennzoil HM I use in the RS.

I needed a cooler a few weeks ago and smartly parked in the back (Piscataway, NJ). I paid for it in Automotive and then decided I would just go to the front to pick up ice. What a mistake! I'd rather pay 3x the price than to wait in those lines again.

Kind of an odd statement to make given that the oil in your signature is available at Walmart.

Yeah, really. In addition, most Walmarts carry M1 0w-40 which is probably one of the most advanced oils out there, meeting a long list of very stringent mfg specs. Walmart's oil selection really isn't that bad, IMO.

Really? In your UOA you stated you picked up 5w-30 PU at Wal-Mart for your Forester ?

I see no problem buying oil at WM and other things at Autozone which is closer. I hit the WM early Sat morning around 7am, no lines, no "people" to deal with, but to each his own.

But mine was procured from the local O'Reilly's. As was my Valvoline synthetic Dexron-VI which is not carried by WM. Neither is the RL 75W90 I run in my differentials. Etc....

Besides, every time I have left a WM store, I felt as if I lost a few IQ points just from osmosis.....

It is the same here too.

What bearing does that have on the "selection" of oil at Walmart? I never said you purchased your oil at Walmart (or that you should), just that your current oil is readily available at Walmart and thus your statement "my car is too much of an investment to be limited by Walmart's oil selection" is rather pointless. Wouldn't you say?

My current fill is indeed available at WM. But prior to new to me purchase, in my previous vehicle, I ran Redline and Amsoil. Not available at WM, and definitely indicative of putting engine protection over a few $$ saved in the short term.

PU and Mobil 1 EP are about $28.79 per 5qt jug.

That comes to about $5.76 qt.

Hard to compete with that. Most auto parts stores charge $7-$8qt for both products.

For those who buy oil as they need it, Walmart is uually a decent deal, although Meijer is better in those areas that have Meijer stores.
For those who plan ahead, there are always better deals available.
Also, the Walmart shopping experience is awful.
The only thing I've bought at Wally in the last year has been G-Oil for the FAR mail-in.

Why would I pay $5.76 a quart of Mobil 1 EP when I can buy their Mobil Super HM for 4.23 a quart?

Probably because the OP is savvy enough to know the difference between a bargain basement oil and a good one.
He probably checked the PDSs, and recognized that Mobil Super has a low end add pack, while M1 HM is very good.
You do get what you pay for.

THIS !!!!! Meijer has one of the rarest oil freely available : Valvoline Maxlife Full Syn , and they have Purolator Filters AND they sometimes run 19.99 for a 5+ qt jug of Maxlife Full Syn!

That makes no sense at all for me,because all I need is an oil for the crown vic to go 5000 miles,so gettin the EP,makes no sense at all, regardless of addpack. Buster wants to quote pricing, thats fine, but not everyone needs or uses the EP line of oil.

+1

I have a friend that works at a quick lube place and he says if they didn't buy it in bulk or from a royal purple rep, they sent someone to walmart. Says its kinda funny checking out with a shopping cart or two full of oil.

I have seen this as well. A guy in quick lube clothes buying a cart full of oil. I also get my oil there too. Unless there is just something to good to be true somewhere else.

Two things:

1) Wal-mart will never put auto parts stores out of business, no matter how many millions of gallons of oil it sells. They are not competitors.

2) Nothing personal, but any oil from WM will do just fine in that '06 Colorado. Even Super Tech. The engine will outlast everything else in that truck.

Hard to beat BJs Shell Formal One "Synthetic" for 20.39 with tax after $9 coupon which comes to 3.40/quart. Just stocked up on a case of 5W20 and 5W30

Oops, forgot about the one quart of PU 5W-30 top off for PU 5W-40 that I bought since Ferarri of Central NJ doesn't carry Pennzoil.

I love that wm sells M1 0w40 @ $6.47....
BUT
where I live, I really wonder if it ever moves off the shelf. They don't stock that well for there to never be a bottle missing on the top shelf.

If I have no choice and need just one thing I will run over quick since wm is next door now and peek at the M1 collecting dust.

Then I say some prayers for a penance for stepping in wm.
Monthly autoparts store deals for me.

+1 2james1 ...the AA or AZ Mobil 1 oil plus M1 filter is about the best non - WM deal going .

IMO....WM has enough selection of oil for over 90% of all vehicles....and at prices that rarely can be beat.

My last purchase was PP at $24.95.....and I had a $20 rebate to boot.

I'm a loyal Purolator PureOne fan....and purchase three or four at a Bi-Mart store... that sells them for a dollar off every month or so....and then take advantage of the Puro $2 rebate....which makes my PureOne's net cost about $3.50 or so.

Based on the above (considering I paid full WM price for the PP)....and adding the PureOne cost...my oil change would cost abour $28.50. Most of the time thats a bit better than AZ or OR's specials. And...I don't need a high tier filter (like an M-1). The PureOne is more than enough filter for my needs.

And BTW...to avoid the long lines at WM, park your vehicle where the tire section is... and check out your purchases there. It much faster doing it that way.

Sometimes a waste of money for much of it and would be best (and economically so) to purchase items elsewhere of better quality at a bit higher price. Another issue I have is the type of people I often encounter while shopping there. Often dirty and rude folks that I do not find makes for an enjoyable shopping experience. Unfortunately the employees can be just as bad. No....I'm not a snob. I just like to be around folks that have similar manners and cleanliness that I have.
Will I still buy my oil there? Probably. But someday I may just pay a bit more and go someplace more pleasant.

Hello....yes, I live in Covington and speak of that Walmart. I've gone to Autozone before and will probably go there again. The oil filters they had weren't the best selection if I recall. The O'Reilly's was ok but in all honesty it's hard for either store to match Walmart prices. But what's a few (literally) bucks to avoid the Walmart experience? It's worth it.
