Buying Oil at Walmart

I support the autoparts stores because if they go out of business, and you actually NEED PARTS for your vehicle, Walmart won't be there to help you.

It is funny to read posts by a bunch of OCD oil changers, all the posts about best oil, UOA and long OCI, and it all comes down to cheapest price for the oil. For me, my car is too much of an investment to be limited by Walmart's oil selection.

I used to have no real opinion of Walmart. After purchasing my oil and filters there I must admit that while the prices are good for those items, I've grown to dislike the store. Why? Well, the huge amount of low quality junk they import for one. Sometimes a waste of money for much of it and would be best (and economically so) to purchase items elsewhere of better quality at a bit higher price. Another issue I have is the type of people I often encounter while shopping there. Often dirty and rude folks that I do not find makes for an enjoyable shopping experience. Unfortunately the employees can be just as bad. No....I'm not a snob. I just like to be around folks that have similar manners and cleanliness that I have.
Will I still buy my oil there? Probably. But someday I may just pay a bit more and go someplace more pleasant.

Don't look at the normal price stickers in the parts stores. You can beat the WalMart prices during the months when the auto parts stores are running specials. In may for example, Advance had a special on mobil 1 change, with $32.99 for 5+ quart jug with M1 filter included, or with $35 for Mobil 1 EP with M1 filter. This month they have offers for Castrol stuff instead. Usually there is a sale on a every major brand every 3-4 months. If you have several stores in your area, check them all. It's highly likely at least one of them has specials on the oil you're looking for.

And you are in Covington which also sports an O'Reilly's and an Autozone. I'm with you in avoiding WM[I'm in Maple Valley].

PU and Mobil 1 EP are about $28.79 per 5qt jug.

That comes to about $5.76 qt.

Hard to compete with that. Most auto parts stores charge $7-$8qt for both products.

Why would I pay $5.76 a quart of Mobil 1 EP when I can buy their Mobil Super HM for 4.23 a quart?

+1

My current stash of QS conventional and Puro Classics cost me $2.17 each, on the $19.99 for 5 quarts of QS Advanced Durability and a Puro Classic filter deals they ran at AAP last year. I doubt even WM could match that price on quarts. I got a similar deal on my current fill PYB with a Puro CLassic, it may have been a dollar or two more for the 5qt/filter deal, but I got that at AAP too. WM does have good deals on some 5+ qt jugs but I don't use those.

Walmart is a hassle. I would just as soon not go there if I can help it. There is an AAP just a few blocks up the street from my house.

The only thing I go to Wal-Mart for is the oil though I've found that some of the oil specials at O'Reily's come close.

$15.47 for 5 quarts of PYB isn't a bad deal.

While I do buy some oil at WM, I mostly buy from a Advance that's within walking distance... Just took advantage of the M1 sale they were running...

I'll use the Motorcraft filters or Purolator Pure One but would not use a Classic on my lawnmower(if it had a filter)... I've had cold startup knock(like every time) using the classic on a 4.6, never knocked prior or since using the better filters...

Most automotive fluids/filters are much cheaper at Walmart. I too have sold my soul in order to save some cash. They had Regane fuel system cleaner for $5.21, at OReillys and Schlep Boys $9.99. Carb cleaner is half the price also.

I agree with the other posters that correctly mention that it's worth buying at the chain auto parts stores because if they were to disappear Walmart will not have the actual parts available.

As for prices just browse the monthly special fliers and you'll almost always find lower prices on any oil you're looking for, and often times you'll find blow out prices or free oil deals as well.

I never have liked Walmart perhaps when the Walton family controlled it things were better (made in USA items) but now it is just a goliath that destroys competitors with unfair advantages.

Kind of an odd statement to make given that the oil in your signature is available at Walmart.

I really don't care for Walmart.

For oil I usually stock up during AA promotions of the brands and types I like.

I usually get the air filters and cabin filters at Walmart because they are a lot cheaper.

Also, the headlight bulbs are like half the price at Walmart versus AA.

Is there proof out there that spending more money on oil will make your engine last longer? And how much longer? Longer than you care maybe? Or is there proof that buying a cheaper alternative (as long as it meets the required spec) will make an engine explode?

I buy my oil at WalMart. I used to go to Pep Boys for their rebates. It worked ok several times then one time I did everything right and they still claimed "not an applicable item". I decided that life is too short to deal with Pep Boys. I don't have an AA. I frequent O'Reillys and Autozone but their oil prices are crazy unless they have a sale on something you want. Since I now use QSUD, WalMart is the best deal going.

Not this month. Also often to get the oil change special I will have to buy a Fram or a Champion filter with the deal. Sometimes the manager is willing to let me pay the difference between the discounted filter with a motorcraft, but sometimes not. Could I use a Fram or Champ filter? Yeah I could, I am not very picky about brand name or store brand oil in my vehicles but some Ford engines like to complain about the oil filter though.

I stopped at my local Shell station yesterday and they have a deal going with Autozone for a $10.00 discount on Pennzoil Platinum when you show the cashier your Shell gas receipt. Even with the 10 buck discount at AZ, PP is still cheaper at my local Walmart.

Not really, imho the armpit was Ames. I always considered it to be a chain that was below wal-mart in standards, the products were even worse, for example they sold a cheap bed with two dwarers beneath the matress, problem is the bed support was made of particleboard that just slotted into a groove around the perimiter, no cross support by decent wood. So 5 months later it broke on a corner.

But, i do buy oil from WM, Normally i go with Mobil Super 5000, but this last change i went with QSUD, i might switch back since the only real reason i went with the QSUD was for detergent and the fact that it is a synthetic oil, but i like the idea of the Mobil being a good 7 bucks cheaper, and easier to find on sale everywhere. As i have a pushrod 3.0L V6 with close to 170k now, the Synthetic will have no major advantages other than longer OCI, but...my OCD about that kicks in at 5k.....i just cannot do 7500 on the oil in a car that calls for 5,000...so wal-mart will keep being my cheap oil fix unless pepboys or autozone, or even advance has a decent sale, or i can get a deal at napa.
