Buy my father in law's Honda Pilot?

For 2000 get it and keep the Sentra too. The two will be less used and you probably have years more life in them. I bought a second vehicle and my insurance went down $100 per year for both over one due to a 20% discount on both for a second vehicle. Costco insurance.

I personally wouldn't, but you know your needs and finances better.

Why wouldn't I?

Because a FIL who "is doing me a big favor [by selling me something]" is not someone I want to own anything from, especially when I am guessing/implying that he "gave you a good deal so I should be thankful".

Screw that.

In traffic its intimidating looking at gigantic new pickups like the Ford F150,250. The bumpers are way above a standard sedan's bumper now. So.. I do agree with your comments about the light and feeling small. If it were me I'd jump on the taller is safer bandwagon and buy the Pilot.

Oh man, the LED thing. The factory new trucks are bad, the aftermarket lifted trucks that dont have re-leveled headlights are way worse. Inevitably a flat brim 20 something guy with a chinstrap beard and stickers all over his truck. 7500 dollars in mods to lift the truck, no money left for anything else so its sitting on tires made in East Timor. Yay.

No kidding. I saw a guy the other night with a big light bar across his F250, was so glad he wasn't coming my way (saw him in a traffic circle, and he was blinding from a distance of at least 200 yards). Driving my old Camry has me blinded by most all trucks now.

Yup, I saw one yesterday (luckily he was ahead of me, he drove past while I was turning out of my street) in a RAM 1500 (

Update:

After a thorough inspection from a Honda specialist, I'm going to pass. In addition to the issues described above, there is a whining rear diff, some body rust under the rear bumper and inside the wheel wells, and a long list of minor issues, including the timing cover/timing chain that someone previously mentioned. It was done at 90k and is due again in 10k miles.

It would cost about 5 grand to get the Pilot ready to where I'd want it. Nah. FIL traded it in and its off to auction and will likely be parted out. He spent quite a bit out of pocket in July 2018 for a new transmission, live and learn.

I'm out with my son and recent dad

looking at various used sedans and crossovers. So far I like the 2015-2018 CRVs the most. Smaller than the pilot but still tall enough that I don't have the locals blinding me with LED upgrades. Nice access to the back seat. it has a hatchback. Under and around 20K with +-50k miles. so not hugely expensive. It's something to consider if you're still looking.
