Burned a little oil….

Turbo with DI, if it was mine, I'd run a 0w40 or 5w40 without question and no further than 5k. Mobil 1 0W40, Castrol Edge 0w40 you can get cheap at Walmart
If it was mine, it would be Redline or Shaeffers. I understand people aren't me thus the Walmart recommendation of two very good oils.

Ford ranger 2.3 ecoboost turbo. On vacation. 650 interstate miles each way. Fresh oil change with Quaker State Ultimate Protection 5w30 about a week or so before I left. Had under 300 miles on it.

Now it’s almost a quart low. Truck hasn’t burned oil before. Should this be concerning? 18k on the truck.

Perhaps Quaker State Ultimate Protection isn’t strong enough for the heat/turbo of the ecoboost. Thats what I get for trying to save a few dollars

Thinking about going back to Castrol edge black bottle or valvoline advanced. Opinions & experiences regarding Quaker State Ultimate Protection welcomed.

Possibly evaporative loss from running hard on the highway. Any idea what the Noack is for Quaker State Ultimate Protection? Probably at the upper limit.

OP- SOPUS oils made from natural gas, which Quaker State Ultimate Protection is, tend to burn off more than non GTL oils. Myself and countless others here have commented this exacted phenomenon. I have no explanation as to why this happens, but it does.

This is a first for this engine. Like others, fuel dilution always pushed the oil up. I just found it strange it lost a quart. No towing. Just a bed of luggage. For the most part I was staying between 70-80 mph. However my mpg which was averaging 18.6 since new increased to a whopping 18.7

That seems like really poor mileage for that vehicle. Maybe look for another culprit than the Quaker State for the oil buning issue.

I got nothing on this. Mine has never used any and that's with towing in the summer and lots of highway use. Like the others said, maybe try a different oil. I've used Havoline since new, which isn't some super synthetic, so nothing special there.

I had a weird issue with using a little oil in my Frontier one time when I tried Castrol Edge 5w30. I had been using magnatek previosly and when it became unavailable I tried Edge. It used about 1/2 quart in maybe 3000 miles? Engine has never used a drop before or since. I switched to something else and it ended?

Strangely, it works fine on Edge 5W-40 Euro L as that is what I am using now. I have also run Quaker State Ultimate Protection without issue.

I think some engines just don't like some oils?

I wouldn't blame the Quaker State oil but rather the change in oils* or the long highway drive.

*It has been stated often that sometimes when a new brand of oil is used the engine will use a little oil at first and then settle in when it gets used to that oils chemistry. Cb_13 stated this in post 2.

Really? That’s amazing. How do you know the rings were sticking and causing consumption, and how did you verify that MoS2 freed them up? Did you disassemble and verify before & after? Because moly has no ability to dissolve existing deposits, it merely reduces sliding friction when oil cannot provide sufficient MOFT and has some effect on mitigating the (already fairly low) risk of LSPI. I’m interested to hear how you think the moly fixed this.

If extra moly in the oil actually fixed oil burners, Toyota likely wouldn’t have its reputation for several engine families of being terrible oil burners since TGMO is loaded with moly, now would they?

That's funny because my Accord burned Edge way quicker than it did across several runs of Pennzoil Platinum.

The only oil I’ve had noticeable usage over my normal 10,000 mile interval has been Amsoil Signature Series, every other brand, next to no makeup oil (Mobil1, Quaker State, Pennzoil Ultra, Pennzoil Platinum, Valvoline Modern Engine, Amalie, Napa, Carquest, RGT).

Supposedly a long highway travel situation like that can possibly lead to high manifold vacuum, causing a little bit too much and continuous vacuum on the PCV system and burn a little oil. Not sure if that’s true. Not sure if the throttle plates are really that continuously close to closed with cruise control set to 75 mph for hours on end or not, but if so I guess this is a possibility.

I just recently returned from a 800 mile round trip and not a drop used. This Pennzoil Ultra in there now is probably the most consistent oil I’ve used that didn’t seem to use a drop across a 10,000 mile interval (at 9,000 miles now).
