Building A Patio Overhang Structure

Denailed the boards, and listed on Craigslist for free. Five hours later...

Knocked down the white fence, and had the tree trimmed, getting ready for new fence coming soon...and gutters.

Prius dude took all the usable wood from the white fence. He also took all the random scrap left over from construction. Love that guy...

A Win Win. You’re happy and the Prius Guy will be talking for a long time about his score.

Nice project, it looks good.

Did somebody steal all your grass? I still have to mow a couple more times before the year is over.
Boo. You're making me feel bad!

When I bought the place, I had lots of grass. For my area, I have a big yard; about 50% bigger than normal. Front yard has sprinklers, but nothing in back. And then there are water restrictions in California...not to mention, HIGH water costs.

I'll likely get some grass growing between the patio and the garage. On the side of the garage, and behind, some sort of "low water landscaping". Maybe, with a greenhouse behind the garage? That would be cool!

I had a call the other day, several days after the craigslist ad for free redwood was removed, from someone looking to buy the redwood. He must have saved my phone number. Anyway, some people were saying I was crazy to give that redwood away, but honestly, I don't care. Getting it gone fast was a real win for me!

I live in Kentucky and I have to mow my five acres every week. I loved it when I was younger but now it's way to much work. I need some of the fake stuff. 👍

Well done. We just took down the 50 year old overhang at our Petaluma house. Hauled all the redwood away. Felt bad doing it...
I can't tell you how many times I repaired this. 3 of the 4 posts and more.

Talking about posts...the old ones on my pergola were 4x4, and one was rotted to the point where it was cut off, and a brick stuffed underneath. It managed to live my entire life in the house, until now, of course.

Are you going to rebuild? Same design? Those Y trusses look pretty sturdy.

Costco has a metal pergola that I might use. Dunno. Currently remodeling the inside: popcorn removal, paint, laminate. Kitchen and 3 bathrooms. Has a sunken living room; I will likley level it.

I don't know what an aluminum awning would cost but I have personally found fiberglass will eventually get trashed by the sun.

Other than keeping the rain off your head, I don't see the purpose of clear panels unless you want to get baked by the sun.
The smoke panels knock down quite a bit of the sun. This photo, posted earlier, shows the difference between direct sun and the panels. Anyway, many years in this house with the semi-clear roof, and not much problem to speak of.

To save money, I took responsibility of the construction waste material, thus Prius Dude.

I cleaned up all the metal material, including old gutters, aluminum extrusions from the old porch walls, plumbing waste, cast iron utility sink, etc, and took it to the street, and my best buddy, the metal monger, took it ALL. He even took a box of rusty nails, extracted from the boards picked up by Prius Dude. Win-Win!

All remaining waste material is bagged. I went around the neighborhood, and gained acceptance to top off everybody's trash can on garbage day. Today, I got rid of 8 bags. Each bag, construction grade, has a cardboard box inside, so the sharp-edged waste doesn't cut the bag to ribbons.

The new fence goes in next week, then the new gutters. Then, my problem, to paint the place. Good fun!

Instead of replacing the white fence, a gate is getting installed, between the house and the brick wall separating my place from the neighbors. Also, a wood extension fence is being added on top of the brick wall, to bring height to 6'. This affords a more open backyard for me.

I like this solution way better than installing a new fence. It's more open. The construction guys have to deal with some of the red brick wall topper bricks being loose. They are pulling them off and cementing them back. Nothing is easy is seems.

Making progress...

Life and living in So. Calif., where people live on top of one another. And to think, my property is about 50% larger than typical...

For those interested...

A shot of the near completed laundry room. The drywall mud guys just left when this photo was taken. Moldings and finishing done a few days later (no photos of that). Also, a shot showing the finished pergola, and the old white fence. With the fence gone, my backyard area is way more open. A great improvement...

New gutters have been installed. Love it! Water off the back side of the pergola dumps out into the driveway...sort of. Had some big storms here, and water filled the channel where the old white fence was. To help direct the water better, I cleaned out the old channel, and floated some concrete into the channel. Also got an extension for the gutter downspout, so it will dump 18" out into the driveway. Good fun.
