Went to rotate my tires last night and discovered a broken wheel stud on the passenger front of my '08 4runner. The stud ultimately fell back inside the rotor. I know it is not ideal to drive with only 5 of 6 lugs but is it dangerous in the short-term? Also will the loose stud inside rotor cause any damage while driving?

Yeah it can scrape and overheat, get it out of there.

I guess you could drive a couple miles to a garage, but there is some risk.

It depends on the design.
That stud may have been broken for 5 minutes or 5 months.
For a bunch of reasons, get it fixed, now that you now about it.

If you are able to remove the broken stump of a stud yourself that would be a good thing. If you must drive the truck as-is accept that the following may happen:

-There may be some additional damage due to driving the vehicle.
-There is a small chance that piece of wheel stud may come loose and be thrown by a tire (possibly even your own) becoming an unaimed projectile.
-There is a very slight chance that that wheel may suddenly stop rotating while you are driving.

I you are not willing to accept the risks, which isn't the end of the world really, then get it towed.
