Brand New 2012 Nissan Versa (oil advice wanted)

I'm pretty sure all the Nissans these days have drain plugs that come out with a 14mm wrench. Off hand I can't think of anything gasoline fueled and less than 20 years old that uses a fractional size for an oil drain plug, although a 5/8 inch is probably a close enough approximation to a 16mm to work on Fords and a very worn 3/4 inch might work on a worn 19mm on a VW.

Thank you for that info. I am in good shape. I ask because my cousins 2011 Chevy has a goofy torx drain plug in it. I just wanted to make sure.

GM got a little wacky with the torx and inverted torx fasteners in the mid to late 90s when they decided anything Opel must be good. Once you get past the "do I have the right tool" problem the inverted torx really is a great drive in comparison to a traditional hex and regular torx puts phillips to shame. Torx for a drain bolt is still pretty much a GM thing. So long as BMW and Hyundai let you drain the oil with a hex wrench, GM will probably be on their own there.

Stick with around 3750 mi OCI during the warranty period for the few extra bucks spent it is worth it, but like others here mention there is no reason you couldn't easily go at least 5k between changes with any basic good quality dino like Peak, SuperTech, or similar.

But for now follow the severe recommendation by Nissan. Give or take 500 miles.

And for the differential, too. Speaking of crush washers and The Critic's mention of replacing them, I went to the Infiniti dealer to get some when I was doing the differential oil. The parts person looked at me like I was from another planet. I guess no one else buys crush washers. They had no idea what they should be sold for, even after a 5 minute consultation with other counterpersons, and simply gave them to me.

The parts counter at my local Nissan dealer in Atlanta also gives out the crush washers for no charge. I usually ask for 4-6 at a time. It is probably easier to give them away then to write up a $3.00 sale and have to run a credit card for it.

I can order them online, if I so chose, and they're rather cheap that way, too. I have a Fumoto so I really don't have much use for them unless I'm playing with the transmission or the differential.

My diff plugs don't have any crush washers (at least as far as I know - I've never removed mine personally, though I soon will), they're just 13mm plugs. I had no idea that newer Nissan/Infiniti vehicles use more sane plugs with crush washers.

My plugs look like this:

My plug is like the one you showed, but with a hex head and it had a crush washer. I honestly don't recall if there was that black plastic or rubber thing past the threads, though. There's supposed to be a crush washer for the radiator drain and it's probably the same part. At least if they're going to use crush washers on everything, it's nice that they use the same one all over the place.

My radiator drain plug has a rubber O-ring, not a crush washer. The drain plug itself is plastic.

I believe the screw-like object in the middle of the black plastic/rubber is a magnet.

I wonder if the plugs with hex heads would fit on my differential - they'd be much easier to deal with than the current plugs.

I haven't done anything with the rad yet, so I'm not sure. The manual indicates it's a crush washer, but there's plenty of mangled English in there, so it's anyone's guess.

My drain plug had the magnet too for the differential. The hex plug works well. I have no problems with the square ones if they happen to be imperial and fit an extension or ratchet end I have handy. If it were square and metric, I'd be in trouble.
