Brakes on fire

Was in an actual fire or just very smokey brakes?

I've learned that you can't really pad slap on anything that's been run in the salt brine. The caliper pistons seize up. With that said the mechanic should have noticed how hard the pistons were compressing and realized this was going to happen and done new calipers.
The other thing is with that much drag it must have been quite noticeable. I once had a dragging caliper on my BMW and it was very apparent that something was wrong, and I had no fire nor smoke.

They recommended replacing calipers at some point but said they were ok.

like i said after it cooled down i was able to reach in and grab the caliper the wheel does not need to come off the calipers are exposed through the rim.

Thing is there was no drag or noise, it was an actual fire coming from both sides. put it out with a fire extinguisher.

Just got off the phone with the corporate office, they are taking full responsibility, they havent said what caused it, but they are refunding the original cost of the brake job, installing new calipers, brakes and rotors and tires as well as providing a rental car and reimbursing me for the tow and any other damage that was caused by the fire.

yeah, they know they would have lost if it was worse than it already is and you both ended up in court..
you have a pretty strong case if they wouldn't take care of it..

this story also explains why most auto repair facilities err on the side of caution and oversell a brake job.. liability...

Heres the kicker, the mechanic is trying to say he warned me this would happen and I chose to decline calipers. So if he knew this would happen he never should have done the brake job lol He sent us all on a death ride. Never once did they say calipers needed to be replaced and neither did the 1st shop I got an estimate from.

generally,if a shop says you have to have something replaced that is a major safety concern and you decline it, it will be in writing... and they possibly wont even perform the work if they think it is that unsafe... so its just CYA on the mokanix part at this point.. either way, it sounds like you dodged a bullet and someobdy else got hit..

The shop did an incompetent brake job. Those don't look like new rotors - or I would say they didn't clean the protective cosmoline** off them. Another issue is they didn't remove rust where pad ears may locate above the stainless steel inserts causing jamming.

Also have witnessed pad locating ears overly wide due to poor stamping/blanking on a worn die. That will jam the pads

ABS may have balked due to back flow of old, junk fluid if hydraulics "shortcutted" and not bled or cycled.

Sadly, typical of what I have seen and experienced around here at corporate muffler and tire shops. They throw parts at things without any of the required finessing. Poor training, lack of experience and laziness. Pick one or three.

Had to be the brake fluid on fire, maybe he left the bleeders cracked? That might prevent the calipers from retracting, and fluid to leak.

Members concern was addressed and pointless speculation accomplishes nothing. So this ends here.
