So what led you to Bitog when this happened?
The other thing is with that much drag it must have been quite noticeable. I once had a dragging caliper on my BMW and it was very apparent that something was wrong, and I had no fire nor smoke. Was in an actual fire or just very smokey brakes?
I've learned that you can't really pad slap on anything that's been run in the salt brine. The caliper pistons seize up. With that said the mechanic should have noticed how hard the pistons were compressing and realized this was going to happen and done new calipers.
Seeing that wheels are made of steel or aluminum, I don't see how that's possible.
They were not available on the Tahoe that year.I have some magnesium ones
They recommended replacing calipers at some point but said they were ok.
like i said after it cooled down i was able to reach in and grab the caliper the wheel does not need to come off the calipers are exposed through the rim.
Thing is there was no drag or noise, it was an actual fire coming from both sides. put it out with a fire extinguisher. The other thing is with that much drag it must have been quite noticeable. What brand pads did they install? The cheapest Chinese cardboard version they could source? Ceramic wouldn't actually burn.it was an actual fire coming from both sides. put it out with a fire extinguisher.
Wait, you’re saying the wheels were actually burning?I have some magnesium ones
no the calipersWait, you’re saying the wheels were actually burning?
Not his lol, but magnesium wheels can....Wait, you’re saying the wheels were actually burning?
yeah, they know they would have lost if it was worse than it already is and you both ended up in court..Just got off the phone with the corporate office, they are taking full responsibility, they havent said what caused it, but they are refunding the original cost of the brake job, installing new calipers, brakes and rotors and tires as well as providing a rental car and reimbursing me for the tow and any other damage that was caused by the fire.
Heres the kicker, the mechanic is trying to say he warned me this would happen and I chose to decline calipers. So if he knew this would happen he never should have done the brake job lol He sent us all on a death ride. Never once did they say calipers needed to be replaced and neither did the 1st shop I got an estimate from.yeah, they know they would have lost if it was worse than it already is and you both ended up in court..
you have a pretty strong case if they wouldn't take care of it..
this story also explains why most auto repair facilities err on the side of caution and oversell a brake job.. liability...
Not from a typical brake fire. It takes a lot to ignite wheels like that, such as an intensive gasoline fire. Not his lol, but magnesium wheels can....
generally,if a shop says you have to have something replaced that is a major safety concern and you decline it, it will be in writing... and they possibly wont even perform the work if they think it is that unsafe... so its just CYA on the mokanix part at this point.. either way, it sounds like you dodged a bullet and someobdy else got hit..Heres the kicker, the mechanic is trying to say he warned me this would happen and I chose to decline calipers. The shop did an incompetent brake job. Those don't look like new rotors - or I would say they didn't clean the protective cosmoline** off them. Another issue is they didn't remove rust where pad ears may locate above the stainless steel inserts causing jamming.Heres the kicker, the mechanic is trying to say he warned me this would happen and I chose to decline calipers.
