Thank you all for the congrats and warm wishes. I really am falling in love with this truck. I find a lot of new vehicles uncomfortable, but this Tahoe is very comfortable. It drives excellent and handles great. I’m attributing this to the independent rear suspension and front strut suspension over my 2005’s torsion bar front end.
It just drives so nice. Super impressed. It doesn't wander (I mean a new car shouldn't right?!?!), it doesn't go any weird way. It just tracks straight, true and holds the road like an absolute champ. It has GoodYear Wrangler Territory AT tires on it and so far I like them for an OE tire.
So far the fuel economy is great also. I am getting close to 20mpg highway… awesome. I am estimating 425-450 miles per this first tank. SOOO much better than the 220 miles and look for a gas station with my 2005. I guess some of that I can attribute to the cammed LQ4 6.0 swap and my right foot being in it trying to maintain speed with the 4L60 and 3.42 rear end gear. This 5.3/10-speed combo, even with 3.23 rear end gear is superb.
Is the 05 the Tahoe you rebuilt from the ground up a while ago?
Yes it is, I did a lot, front end rebuild -- new UCAs, new lower ball joints, inner and outer tie-rods, steering box, idler arm, idler assembly, pitman arm, wheel bearings, motor swap, all rear suspension -- springs, new arms, pan hard bar, torsion keys, bump stops all the way around, countless transmission, transfer case and differential services.
That Z71 package looks sharp, did you consider any other SUV's?
No not really, the only thing else really in the class that could do what I want would be an Expedition and I do not want a Ford ever again. My uncle worked for Ford and was always gracious with A-plan codes, so I could have probably netted a Ford with a healthy discount, but I did not like how they treated me with my lemon PowerBoost and think Ford's modern products are not great. Those of you who have Fords and have good luck with them, I'm happy for you and hope they continue to serve you well, but I do not like the brand anymore.
My requirements were comfortable SUV, decently optioned, decent power and being able to tow around 7-8k (dump trailer and car hauler). This fits all of that and I like GM... a lot.
Best of luck with it. ...fairly butch tires!
How many miles on the '05?
Joke theme from other threads: They couldn't sell you the car that very day as they hadn't changed the CAF yet!
The 2005 Tahoe has 331,000 miles. About 150k on the swapped LQ4 6.0 motor and probably 175-180k on what I'd imagine was a rebuilt 4L60E from 2014.
Wowzas! The Chevy of all Chevies.
Is it going to be Fluid Film, Woolwax, or one of the others? Assuming you're staying in the rust belt that is..
It will probably be Woolwax. And I am going to load the snots out of that thing to make sure it is COATED. Yep I am still in the area down in the Southtowns so of course you know the drill.
IMO: buy two containers of any dexos 0w-20 oil with filter (preferably an Endurance or Premium guard XL) and document that receipt. then return 0w-20 and fill with 5w-30 every 6k miles. you will hear a dramatic difference in valve train noise on the LT motors.
I am glad you chimed in on this. So you guys have a bunch of these L83/L84s in your fleet that you do run 5W-30 in? If you run it in that many of them, then I'm all ears. I might also seek out a 0W-30. Also I might even get in touch with HPL... kinda new for me as I always enjoy some Mobil 1, but hey I want this thing to get some good treatment.
