Bought a brand new Tahoe

Gorgeous truck. I find the shape of the Tahoe the handsomest of all the full-sized SUV.

Wishing you many years of safe, reliable transport.
You are getting close Mr May-be

That's great-the OP just plucked down $75,000.00 or so and you are telling him to void the warranty. Did you see my thread about my (2023) 5.3 Silverado towing my 5,000 pound travel up to Leadville, CO running 0W/20-up 9,000 foot passes in 90 degree weather?

To sum up my post-
It was uneventful...
i maintain 20+ trucks with this motor in it while in industrial fleet service. yes, you shouldn’t have had an issue as the engineers made sure that the truck would “survive” on that oil through warranty.

I’d rather experiment when the vehicle is on warranty than off.
Besides, LTs in HDs use 5w30s.

As mentioned, it needed a PDI, which is an hour of tech time.
In our jurisdiction the tell that a vehicle needs a PDI is front plate bracket hasn't been installed.

Dealer list of things to do.
  • PDI
  • Software update check
  • Recall check
  • Finance - includes loan approval, proof of insurance, and upsell extras of course
  • Licensing if req'd
  • Detail
All this needs to fit into the shop, finance, detail and front sales workflow.
We have done same day deliveries, but it does take us several hours.
Hmmmmm. they dont do that here . If they do they are faking it

If you look at the miles on used ones they are surviving well past warranty. And probably with OCis's past 5,000 miles.

The 5.3 had a lifter issue, so was it resolved or not?
What does widespread mean?

Widespread means there are NOT dozens upon dozens of 5.3s lined up in the service drive and wrapping around the block with this issue.

I'm not arguing with you...have a great rest of your day.

Same in the Buffalo area. The only PDI that is getting done is that which prevents things from working on the vehicle or what triggers dash warning lights.

Years ago when I bought my new 2016 Subaru Forester, I watched my sales person feverishly and haphazardly peel all the plastic off the vehicle and quickly wipe it down with windex and a cloth before he slapped my plates on it to give me the vehicle. When I got it home it had something like 55psig in each tire and lots of missed protective plastic bits on the interior. There was something that needed to get plugged in under the hood or fusebox too, and the salesperson took care of that.

Ok. I was wondering are you referring generally to engines or specifically to 5.3.

Not my thing, but very nice.
Yes, these and their larger kin, the Suburban, are very nice highway cruisers and are also very capable tow vehicles.
If I had a need to tow anything substantial, either one would be a very good choice for a trip, especially with family.
Enjoy it, as I'm sure you will.
May it serve you well.

Me so jealous.
I believe you get two free oil changes from GM with a new vehicle purchase.
Are you going to do an early post break in oil change to get rid of the glitter?
My dealer said we only get one free oil change with the 24 Tahoe but I usually start with Mobil 1 at 5000 miles anyway.
We did get a free 200000 mile powertrain warrenty from the dealer

Good looking truck.

The Z71 or AT4 is by far the best looking packages IMO. Dad had a diesel on order for quite some time, but it never came through so he went with an expedition. At that time, the RST was the only model available with the diesel. Something about the oil cooler? I believe they made the change for this year's model.

Thank you all for the congrats and warm wishes. I really am falling in love with this truck. I find a lot of new vehicles uncomfortable, but this Tahoe is very comfortable. It drives excellent and handles great. I’m attributing this to the independent rear suspension and front strut suspension over my 2005’s torsion bar front end.

It just drives so nice. Super impressed. It doesn't wander (I mean a new car shouldn't right?!?!), it doesn't go any weird way. It just tracks straight, true and holds the road like an absolute champ. It has GoodYear Wrangler Territory AT tires on it and so far I like them for an OE tire.

So far the fuel economy is great also. I am getting close to 20mpg highway… awesome. I am estimating 425-450 miles per this first tank. SOOO much better than the 220 miles and look for a gas station with my 2005. I guess some of that I can attribute to the cammed LQ4 6.0 swap and my right foot being in it trying to maintain speed with the 4L60 and 3.42 rear end gear. This 5.3/10-speed combo, even with 3.23 rear end gear is superb.

Is the 05 the Tahoe you rebuilt from the ground up a while ago?
Yes it is, I did a lot, front end rebuild -- new UCAs, new lower ball joints, inner and outer tie-rods, steering box, idler arm, idler assembly, pitman arm, wheel bearings, motor swap, all rear suspension -- springs, new arms, pan hard bar, torsion keys, bump stops all the way around, countless transmission, transfer case and differential services.
That Z71 package looks sharp, did you consider any other SUV's?
No not really, the only thing else really in the class that could do what I want would be an Expedition and I do not want a Ford ever again. My uncle worked for Ford and was always gracious with A-plan codes, so I could have probably netted a Ford with a healthy discount, but I did not like how they treated me with my lemon PowerBoost and think Ford's modern products are not great. Those of you who have Fords and have good luck with them, I'm happy for you and hope they continue to serve you well, but I do not like the brand anymore.

My requirements were comfortable SUV, decently optioned, decent power and being able to tow around 7-8k (dump trailer and car hauler). This fits all of that and I like GM... a lot.
Best of luck with it. ...fairly butch tires!
How many miles on the '05?

Joke theme from other threads: They couldn't sell you the car that very day as they hadn't changed the CAF yet!
The 2005 Tahoe has 331,000 miles. About 150k on the swapped LQ4 6.0 motor and probably 175-180k on what I'd imagine was a rebuilt 4L60E from 2014.
Wowzas! The Chevy of all Chevies.

Is it going to be Fluid Film, Woolwax, or one of the others? Assuming you're staying in the rust belt that is..
It will probably be Woolwax. And I am going to load the snots out of that thing to make sure it is COATED. Yep I am still in the area down in the Southtowns so of course you know the drill.
IMO: buy two containers of any dexos 0w-20 oil with filter (preferably an Endurance or Premium guard XL) and document that receipt. then return 0w-20 and fill with 5w-30 every 6k miles. you will hear a dramatic difference in valve train noise on the LT motors.
I am glad you chimed in on this. So you guys have a bunch of these L83/L84s in your fleet that you do run 5W-30 in? If you run it in that many of them, then I'm all ears. I might also seek out a 0W-30. Also I might even get in touch with HPL... kinda new for me as I always enjoy some Mobil 1, but hey I want this thing to get some good treatment.

Here's a question, anyone have a new 5.3/10-speed and running a DFM disabler? Which one are you using and how do you like it?

i don’t know the exact count off the top of my head but we have atleast 20 LT 5.3’s that have been on a steady diet of 5w-30. just had one go 12k miles on HPL PCEO 5w-30 and it shed less than 1ppm/1k iron. one thing i would also look into is this: https://www.smartstopstart.com/chevy-buick-cadillac-gmc-products.html

Is anyone making one for this setup now? I know Range didn’t have one when I last looked for our 2021.
