Both drowning and you can save 1. Dog or stranger?

I tend to think that animal behaviorists have some "scientific theocracy" that prohibits lessor creatures from having human like attributes. While many dogs appear to be nothing more than, domesticated, socialized, and conditioned wild animals. I've seen behaviors that would belie that notion. Surely there is a larger portion of instinctive behavior, but if I've read my mating rituals correctly, and the sparing that males do in display for females ..I really don't think we have a whole lot over some of the dancing birds on parade in competition. Does it matter if it's one physical display or the other?

Fact: If you die in the house with a dog, and no one comes upon your container, he will eat your face, probably on day 3-4 - depending somewhat on ambient temperature and when he last cooked a three egg omelet.

If both were drowning and you could only save one...which would you save? you're beloved furry best friend or some random stranger that you've never seen?

It's a debate but given I'd save my dog because I treated it like a human being...I would have stronger emotions for him. But again when it becomes real...you react and do what you do...you will have pain,,so what stupid question are you asking...

That is true. Why would anyone save a stranger over a dog.

Now if the stranger was a playmate centerfold model and the dog was a kickit i would reconsider.

Since I was a lifeguard 15+ years ago, I have learned to be cautious of drowning people. If you try to rescue them, they will pull you under. You have to figure why the stranger was in the water in the first place since they can't swim.

Easily.
Why didn't they take better care of their own family member, and why didn't they rescue him or her?

I don't own a dog, I own cats, but if I had to choose, I personally would save my pet.

There was this plane crash in a remote mountain region once ....

Luckily, iirc, it was a snow/ice covered mountain so preservatives, or lack there of, were not an issue.

Not to worry if there was a six year old girl drowning my 90 pound doberman would rescue her...Dobermans Love children
That is one reason they are called the great protectors..

What are you saying anyway by "you react and do what you do...you will have pain"
What pain as long as my dog will be ok he would save the other person..

Some Ag couple I knew up near Penn St. had a pig as a dog.

You give us cause to recall the words "One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces".

Have I mentioned how much I disdain situational ethics?

I find this talk of animals are just animals very draining. Yet, it is true - they're not humans. Luckily for us.

My dog shows plenty of emotions. My dog smiles. She poses for pictures. My dog enjoys life. My dog can be sad, scared, and angry. She can be vengeful and deceptive when she's done something wrong. She knows, obviously, what is right (or, rather, what is wrong). She makes decisions, simple ones. She picks out her own bandannas. She prefers the color purple (don't know how or why). She's turned off lights at bedtime. Dogs mimic their owner or trainer. As for behavior, a 2-4 year old child would be the correct comparison.

I think the quality that I enjoy the most is trust. It takes trust to have a 95 pound dog rest her head on your neck while sleeping. From both of us. The example Pablo is giving for a dog is one-sided. If I were trapped in a house for 3-4 days without food, I'd be considering my dog as a good source as well. I'd say that we're on the same level in that scenario.

Would I save my dog over a stranger. Hard to say. Would I hurt a stranger hurting my dog. That's easier to say. I value humans, but I also value my dog.

I included the pics to show you what I come home to. As you can see, she can be a real bum (see comment on mimic above). She's part of the family.

Many dogs save lives every year you dont always read about it in the newspapers but they do their job My doberman would protect myself and my whole family in any situation and believe me he is good at it...What do you mean by as you put it: If I were trapped in a house for 3-4 days without food, I'd be considering my dog as a good source as well. I'd say that we're on the same level in that scenario. A good Source??
