I feel the same way...

I would save my dog, without reservation.
The stranger should have learned better water survival skills.
So sorry.

I would really be concerned if you are a rescue diver and had to make life and death decision. I hope I'm not on the other end or any one else.

who cares

Well, the dog's relatives were his family, us.
Look at it this way.
A Pyr will lay down his life protecting you.
Will any stranger do that?
Don't you owe the dog the same level of loyalty?
I have no idea whom this hypothetical drowning victim might be, while the dog is a member of the family.
I would no more have let him drown than I would my wife or one of my sons.
Family trumps all, and I pity those who don't understand that.

well actually most dogs can swim so as long as he is safe i would do my best to save the stranger of course he would never hear the end of it...
But my baby is in my heart he is my great protector better than my gun and even better than my wife when she is mooding he sleeps with one eye opened and he weighs 95 pounds

How about this?
If I am trying to rescue you, and you are all over me and putting me in a potentially dangerous situation, what am I trained to do?
Sink.
You won't come with me.
Firat rule of rescue is that we all go home, and we save all of you only if we can.

The dog is not a family member you own the dog...a dog is a dog they come and go I know I sound so cold and yes I own 5 dogs.
and not one would make it out of the water before a human.

fdcg27, I think I agree with you. But I still have problems with the decision, I don't believe it would be the "correct" thing to do. Yet, I think I could live with it.

As a pure ethical exercise I think the proper outcome would be to save the human being.

I think this is one of them trick questions like "if a plane crashes exactly on the border and no one can be identified, where do you bury the survivors".

In this case, if you have a random stranger that you've never seen, how could you rescue him. The logical answer, then, is to save the dog that you can see.

The dog is a part of your family, unless you are one of those poor white trash types who "owns" a small pack of barely cared for beasts.
The stranger is not.
I have no doubt as to which one I would save.
As an ethical exercise, would it be correct to save someone who has demonstrated no loyalty to you, or a beast that has been your loyal protector?
I think you would owe it to the dog to save the dog.
The stranger should have learned better water skills.
I they hadn't, well shame on them.
They could have.

fdcg -- you're a rescue diver, and you would save the dog.and, "the stranger should have learned better water survival skills". "so sorry".wow.you can't argue with logic like that.
i understand that people love their dogs -- but, unless your dog came out of your wife's womb, then it is NOT a family member.
lethal -- see what you started ? 'gotta go check out the ball game. take care
