Recently, I scoured the internet for some German made Bosch filters that I've used in the past. I don't know a lot about them, but they're built like a tank and seem to be made of quality materials. Plus they're dirt cheap.

Website

Not being able to see the ADBV material from the outside of the filter, I blew in the hole to test the seal, and much to my surprise there's absolutely no restriction, meaning no ADBV. The website I purchased these from confirms this, though I did not see that initially.

Does the 3800 Series II require an ADBV equipped filter? This is a recommended filter for my application and comes up in the search. The filter mounts to the block sideways, parallel with the crankshaft so I'm confused why there'd be no ADBV.

Any ideas?

This engine does have the bypass in the block, so that's not my concern.. But the orientation of the filter allows the oil to leave the filter when the engine is shut down, and I'm not certain there's anything in these engines to prevent that...

Isn't the filter in the 3.8 series II s/c straight up and down anyway???

It is on my moms 2002 Monte Carlo 3.8 II n/a

No, it lies on its side.

If you go to Purolator's website (or any other filter maker) and look up their filter for your car, does it say it has an ADBV?

The Purolator website does say it has an ADBV. In fact all of the other filters I've used have had one.

I know I've used this filter before and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, like startup noise and such. I might run these in summer and just keep an eye out for signs of oil starvation at startup.

I would hate to have to throw six filters away...

Since the filter is straight up and down, you should be fine without an ADBV. The only difference is that without the ADBV, any oil that would've sat in the oil holes between the filter and the head will now be drained, whereas with the ADBV, those would still be full. In some motors, that distance from the filter to the head is very short. Either way, your filter will still be full of oil (even without the ADBV) as will be the oiling holes approximately 1" above the filter, since the oil enters the filter from the top (and fluids seek their own level).

The filter on my car mounts sideways, so in theory, the oil will run out of the can and have to be refilled each time the car is started. That's what bothers me about the lack of ADBV. I'll probably sell these and get something else.

Sorry, I thought someone had said on here that your engine had the filter mounted vertically, not horizontally. But yes, if your filter is mounted horizontally (sideways), I'd use a filter with an ADBV without question.

Does a filter without an ADBV meet the engine specs? I would assume the engine maker would have specified an ADBV!

I don't know if it meets engine specs, hence my post here.

The OEM filter, AC Delco PF47 does have an ADBV, so I assume GM specifies it.

I think Bosch omitted it because many applications don't need it since the filter is mounted vertically such that the oil cannot leave the filter on shutdown.

My German Bosch filters for my Audi did not appear to have an ADBV, although another poster indicated that it might have, just not in a way we're used to. In any case, I didn't take it apart. My Audi didn't need one, and I wasn't that curious.

The American made Bosch filters tend to have them, at least those that I've come across. Why? Your guess is as good as mine.

It's not common anymore, but years back, plenty of filters were horizontally mounted without ADBVs. Sure, noise would sometimes occur, but I've had such engines last many miles. All things being equal, though, I'd prefer the ADBV. Back when I had my LTD, many years ago, that's why I used Motorcraft or AC Delco instead of Wix. The former two had ADBVs. The Wix did not.

I'd say you should send them back to Summit. The description (at bottom) clearly says it has a silicone adbv. Had you gotten the equivalent Purolator made Bosch Premium 3331 you would have gotten a silicone adbv.

The German Bosch and Mann that look like that, with 4 holes and adbv, have a gray-ish looking adbv clearly visible through in the inlet hole openings. Doing the 360 view and zoom available on the site, I sure don't see one.

I've checked the P1 and Wix equivalents, and they spec an adbv.

I also have a 2000 SSEI and my oil filter is on a downward angle, not horizontal. The oil would not run out of the filter on my SSEI.

I'll have to look again Rod, but I think if it's at an angle, it's probably 15 degrees at best. I definitely remember it being very close to horizontal.

It's not much of a angle but it won't let much oil drain back to the oil pump. I use the oil filter for the 4.3L Chevy which is taller than the stock filter for the SSEI. Wix 51036 or Baldwin B35-S and have put over 250k fun miles on our SSEI(bought it new in 2000). If you have the filters use them, it won't hurt anything.
Here is a good site for the Bonneivlle

IMO, it really doesn't matter if it's slightly downward or horizontal other than the amount of drain back. Pretty clear the vehicle specs for an oil filter with an adbv, and that's what should be used.

Perhaps, depending on the location of the filter, if it was verticle/thread end up, an adbv might not be as critical.

That said, from all the US made oil filter cat./parts look ups, the vehicle's filter specs for an adbv.
