What does boron do in oil?

+1, I was just wondering the same thing after seeing the Pennzoil Ultra 5w20 VOA.

People need to remember that too when reading there UOA's and not mistaking it for antifreeze.
I thought sodium was the antifreeze tracer. Am I wrong?
it is, but so is boron found in AF im pretty sure.

I think it's more detergent than anything else. Might have some AW properties to it, but I believe cleaning is its main function.
I just searched the Cooling System Fluids & Additives for "Boron" and it showed up so i would say it's present?

first of all,i believe there are several different technologies being used that show up as boron in VOA or UOA.they come in different forms,either as a type of dirrect boron additive or some type of boron is present in a complex additive.
i'll skip right to what i believe boron is being used as,some possibly as several below,others possibly as all below.
#1-anti-friction and anti-wear.
#2-anti-oxidation.
#3-anti-rust.
#4-detegent(helps eliminate and not create more deposits and varnish).
#5-reduce bearing weight loss(kind of already mentioned).
#6-reduce exhaust emissions by using this,instead of something else.
#7-to keep oil more effective longer(kind of already mentioned).
#8-anti-sludge(kind of already mentioned).
#9-to make up for less Zn and Ph.
#10-to replace other additives that may have been found to be highly aggressive,especially at higher temperatures.
#11-low-ash lubricant while at same time is effective at neutralizing acids.
most of all,i believe it is being used to get all the possitive affects of at least one,or possibly more,previously used additives,while at the same time not having the negatives.
imo,it is quite possibly,cutting edge technology.
