Since hernia surgery in December I’ve decided at 67 years old (68 in April) I’m going to get the boat serviced at the dealership. Its a sobering reminder that age (and gut) is now going to dictate what I can do going forward. The thoughts of lifting the 60 lbs. outdrive to replace the water pump impeller just wasn’t a wise decision. Anyway, I’m having the trolling motor batteries replaced with one 24 volt lithium battery. Anyone using lithium batteries in the boating world?

I have a fishing buddy and we trade off every other time. His boat/truck one time and mine the other and we both keep them in the same storage unit area. They are single units with power. We both have the Garmin live scopes and hummingbird follow the contour GPS units on our Terrova electric trolling motors. His boat had a nearly dead starting motor battery last time out. The starting motor battery runs the electronics. He is buying a lithium battery to run this spring/summer and they are about $200.00 or more. Both of our boats have kickers and the battery usually has enough power to start the kicker but not the large motors. I have a NOCO jump starter in case I ever need a jump start and have not had to use it yet. Expect to pay $150.00 per hour for boat labor. Lithium is the way to go if you run a lot of electronics and I will buy lithium next time around.

Thanks. Got a quote for the 24 volt lithium trolling motor battery. I was shocked. But…my boat will be kept in dry stack with no access to electrical power for recharging both the existing 12 volt batteries so I’m going to go with the expensive single 24 volt battery. It’s lighter in weight and my plan is to remove-take it with me to recharge at home. This may get old but I depend on my trolling motor mainly for spot lock (anchor) and really want to avoid the need to drop the traditional anchor every time I hit a fishing location. Too hard on my old back…
