for high oil consumtion use? as a band aid? i know here on bitog some dont support that band aid high mileage idea but there are more and more owners of old vehicles that found this way to reduce consumption on oil.well it works..
Why do you think warranty is a consideration?Greetings, wondering if there is any new information on this topic. Recently purchased a 26 X5 B58. Manual calls for LL 01 FE or LL 22 FE ++, with a referral to the underhood sticker which calls for 0w-12. I'm looking to drain the factory fill at 1000 miles (may do it sooner), but I'm uncomfortable with 0w-12, due to the viscosity, and the lack of choice in vendors. The BMW product doesn't list any ACEA ratings. Considering using 0w-30 from Motul or Castrol, as I've used their LL 17 FE + 0w-20 products in our 230i B48 and liked them both. Warranty is a consideration as well. Opinions? Thanks.
The BMW branded oil carries a BMW part number, that would be all it needs.Greetings, wondering if there is any new information on this topic. Recently purchased a 26 X5 B58. If I had a choice, unless you are starting at -30 or below I'd go with Mobil 1 ESP with BMW Longlife-04 approval. Available at Walmart for $28.Greetings, wondering if there is any new information on this topic. Recently purchased a 26 X5 B58. Use it under warranty. Motul has one through FCP.Greetings, wondering if there is any new information on this topic. Recently purchased a 26 X5 B58. Just for clarity for the OP, that is the Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 that has the BMW LL-04 approval. The Mobil 1 ESP 0w-30 has no BMW approvals, though it is highly thought anyway. If I had a choice, unless you are starting at -30 or below I'd go with Mobil 1 ESP with BMW Longlife-04 approval. Not to go off topic. Cell phones are in the same spot, nothing new really, they’re thinking little things to try and get you to drop another 1200Tackling thinner and thinner motor oils seems to be the low-hanging fruit, in my opinion. I believe car manufacturers are reaching a point where they are doing this more to show they're actively addressing emissions and fuel economy rather than actually achieving significant improvements. The difference in net energy between two tanks of gasoline is greater than the fuel economy gains from switching from 5W-40 to 0W-16. However, the manufacturing cost increases exponentially because now you have to enhance precision, use more expensive materials, coatings, and so forth, to accommodate the thinner oil, which ultimately leads to a setback in long-term reliability.
You can code it to always be off with BimmerCode. As a related aside, we had a phone chat with the BMW rep the other day, and while we were kvetching about ASS, he questioned us at length about our dislike for the feature (I use the term feature loosely). Seems like they are interested in the consumer's perception of it. Did tell us how to defeat it, but you still have to do it at each start up. Oh well.
Is that available with idrive 8.5 in a 2026? Didn't think it was an option at that stage? You can code it to always be off with BimmerCode.
Don't have that on our car, thought it wasnt US spec.GPF on a daily driver shouldn't cause any problems if the proper low ash oils are used. We've been living with them (DPF) on Diesels even before the Add Blue systems caused people nightmares. How the manufacturer implements it is probably more important than the need for low ash oil as it is and will be available. BMW has been collecting the data in European use.
You are correct. The US X5's do not have a GPF.Don't have that on our car, thought it wasnt US spec.
Again, you are correct. There is no way to permanently disable it on iDrive 8.5 cars.Is that available with idrive 8.5 in a 2026? Didn't think it was an option at that stage?
Re the ASS, I'm ok with being able to turn it off thru the iDrive screen. This wasnt pointed out to us upon delivery and the factory removed the button from the console by the shifter where it was located on other models, so I was always using sport mode as a workaround. This is a much better arrangement. You are correct. The US X5's do not have a GPF.

Didn't realize they got rid of that.Is that available with idrive 8.5 in a 2026? Didn't think it was an option at that stage?
My US 2008 Mercedes E320, OM642 Diesel has a DPF. It does not have Add Blue even though it has the BlueTec label on the trunk.Don't have that on our car, thought it wasnt US spec.
