Black wheels trend

I was in Florida all last month (Jupiter). Could not believe the number of black cars and trucks there.

Cool and trendy rules, no matter if the color makes the parked vehicle even hotter than it needs to be. Form over function all day long with many of today's consumers.

I think, perhaps, you are being too general. When I bought the Caprice the choices were slim...black or black. So I ended up with a black one. I think it is a bit different when you are buying used.

You do have a bit of a point, but the vast majority of those vehicles I saw(many of which were generic half ton pickups) were those available in a wide variety of colors.

Black wheels are obviously popular if the car makers are naming packages that reflect this popularity. Personally, I think the majority of black wheels on vehicles either look like four steel wheels put on after you bent four rims or you ran out of money for a new set.

The menacing, wannabe street thug cred that's evidently the goal with some of these drivers more often comes off as "me too consumerist" or "ghetto consumerist" than something that isn't forced. It just seems that many of these black wheels aren't styled to look like nice wheels but more like something that goes on a monster truck. IMO, it's hard not to think of them as a cartoon if that's the aesthetic you're looking for...

My MG has the factory OEM wheels and they are mostly black with silver-painted accents on them. Black wheels go back a long time.

My preferences on color vary a whole lot. By and large, I'm a big fan of OEM rims. In fact, not too long ago I was looking at a Jag S-type R that was priced fairly but had some terrible looking aftermarket chrome. They were at least in the OEM diameter and had nice OEM sized Michelins on them, so I could have bought a set of factory rims without worrying about tires. The problem, though, was that I found I'd be looking at HUGE bill to find OEM S-type R rims-they seem to make their way onto a lot of non-R S-types. The brakes on the R mean that you MUST have an 18" rim(or larger) so AFAIK the real R rims are the only factory option. The rims made an okay deal into a terrible deal for me(especially when I started considering how bad repairs were going to be on a 100K+ sueprcharged Jag, even though I know the engine well in NA form).

All of that aside, I actually tend to shy away from chrome unless the wheel is a fairly simple design. Someone posted a photo of a 'Vette earlier in this thread with a thin 5-spoke design in chrome-that to me is a great looking chrome wheel. If the design starts getting very complicated, I much prefer more of a matte finish whatever form that takes(anodized aluminum, etc). I like light gray on some cars, but don't care for anything much darker than that.

What I really like is wheels that have a combination of bare machined aluminum look with a touch of black.

Something like this.

Those don't look bad...at least they have some contrast...all black wheels just make the tire and wheel look like one...

I purposely bought a truck with no chrome on it. Darker (not black) wheels too.

Chrome makes it look like grandpa's truck. Perhaps why the OP doesn't like the look.

Good news is most vehicles like trucks will let you choose the look...

You buy yours, I'll buy mine. I really don't care how you spend your money...

Dang! I must be really old. I like white stripe tires on stock silver wheels. Although my favorite of all time is the good ole southern redneck black steelies with white letter tires!!!
