That's what I've found, a lot of 4.3 v6 owners run the PF-52 instead. There was a member here who worked for GM that said originally GM switched to the PF-47 just for ease on the assembly line and that there was no problem running the longer filter.

looking on the Wix site allows comparison of their various filters + their specs for performance + fitment

If you can find a PF52E, it's definitely longer with same diameter.
If it doesn't have to be an E (Ecore), then the standard / original PF52 is the same without the black cage.

The 52E flows better than the 52 btw. With some GMs, the Ecore helps stop cold start chatter.

The 2wd takes the PF-47 and the 4wd takes the PF-52.

But you could run the pf-52 on a 2 wheel drive (2011 4.3 v6) there is plenty of room and ground clearence?

The Firebird FORMULA in my signature requires the PF47 however, I have been running the longer PF52(or aftermarket brands-see below) for many years. The PF52 is longer but, NOT LARGER around so, it fits into the same space as the PF47.

A larger around GM filter(FATTER) will not fit in my engine's filter space/area. Even though the LARGER GM filter thread and gasket would still correct, the filter is just too BIG.

For reference, I used my ol' 93 S-10 pickup w/4.3L V6. You can also use in place of the PF52(regardless of the letter designations)
