Best Toyota filter wrench?

I've been eyeballing that one. I'm curious if those indexes will bust the tabs off the plastic filter cap, they don't like being pushed. Hmm...

Unless you're a professional mechanic and need a lifetime warranty, the Snap-On prices are outrageous IMO.

Here's what I'd get:

I bought the Assenmacher TOY640 for my wifes Avalon, from they're website IIRC. Works great for about $20.

We had a filter cover over tightened by a Quik lube place, and had a devil of a job getting it off.
I estimate over 100 ft lbs was needed!

I ended up attaching a filter removal tool with epoxy resin.
It has stayed there ever since.

And why not?

In reality. The filter need not be tightened to an extent where a regular, cheap tool would not remove it.
The cover has an 'o' ring seal (not a gasket) plus tabs to prevent it un-doing.

It need not be put on super tight.

Agree.

Assenmacher Oil Filter Cap Wrenches are very good at more reasonable price. I have/use Lisle Oil Filter Cap Wrenches for my MB E430, Honda S2000 and Volvo V70 without any problems, the bonus is it costs 1/3 the price of Assenmacher.

What importance is it is made of metal and perfectly matches the filter holder so that it will not cause any damage to it.

I got mine at the dealer, the TOY640 I think, for $25 or so. Not as cheap as off Amazon, but cheap enough. Does the job.

Prior owner of my truck over tightened the drain valve, and now the whole unit comes off if I just use an extension on the the 3/8 drive ratchet.

I tighten mine until I feel them bottom out. No more than that.

Unfortunately, many people do overtighten them. And as you experienced, it can take a surprising amount of torque to get them off.

I have seen more than one of the correct filter tools break trying to get an overtightened cap off. The plastic is STRONG. One of the broken tools was a Snap-On that had been used maybe two or three times before it met its match on a Lexus. Cracked right down the center.

I'd just buy one of the ~$20 tools and do all of the oil changes yourself.

I'm a Toyota tech and use them daily. The Assenmacher ones work ok, but I really dislike using a socket.

The ABN one pictured above is by far my favorite, and all the techs come to me when there is a really stubborn filter and theirs just slip. Though, if you use just the 3/8" section, you'll wear it out with heavy use. I'm saying daily for a year straight. but for $15, it's my favorite for sure. I use the ABN711 which is "4 cylinder"
